Well, I just joined the forum and I'm completely new to recording, so could you tell me some things I should do? I already have all of the instruments (guitar, keyboards, drums) and computer/recording software.

Sorry for being so general :o

Start by reading the excellent FAQs on this site.... maybe even a few of your manuals. There are also articles on my studio website (link in my SIG)......

Okay, thanks, I'll read those, but I still may need some more info. I know I really need good recording skills, but I also want to know what equipment I should have and what my studio floorplan should be to start with.

Also, I'm only 12 years old, so I'm on a very tight budget :o

nickd123, It's awesome that you are starting out so young!

At twelve years old, I would seriously consider a porta studio of some sort. Maybe even a 4 track cassette which you can get for a couple hundred bucks.

Or, if you can come up with about $400, check out the DP-01 new from TASCAM. Or for about $300 a FOSTEX MR-8. There are some very cool and talented people on this board who can give you great advice about using the MR-8.

Either of those machine will allow you to do basic tracking AND transfer tracks over to your computer PC (with USB cable) so you can work with PC based software.

With most of these, you will either need a mixdown deck of some sort or a way to mixdown to your PC.

I know some pc recording proactivists might disagree with me, but I honestly believe you will build very valuable skills by starting out this way.

The ease with which you will be able to lay down tracks and the skills you will learn will serve you very well through out your recording career!

Plus - you will be able to spend more time with your hands on your instruments instead of a mouse!

Good luck and keep us posted!

Well, I actually have been recording on my Mac with GarageBand for about a year, and I have a full MIDI interface, Alesis Keyboard, and a Custom Made G&L Legacy someone gave me (incredible tone). I am looking to upgrade my software, buy an external harddrive, get a mixer, some monitors, etc. :)

software: n-tracks studio
soundcard: m-audio delta 44
mixer: yahama mg series
monitors: wharfedale diamond pro 8.2
mics: shure 57

this will give you a good place to start if you want to record to your computer, but I would really suggest getting a little standalone cassete/hard disc recorder. Thats how most of us started out. Its a great way to learn about recording.

Thanks notbradsohner. Right now I will take all the advice I can get!

Yea, Im tha same way on needin to know the equipment to record. Im 17 and i want to learn how to make beats. I need to know where it is to learn from, and wat is the easiest way to learn.
