we are having a huge jam on saturday, and i'm going to be doing some recording, so heres the deal...

2 drum kits
3 guitars
1 or 2 basses
1 keys
1 or 2 vocals

i'll be sharing mics with the p.a. (wev'e only got dynamics, but we can use a pzm), thing is i only have four tracks to record on at a time......

what the hell do i put on each track?

Woah.....Dude I have no idea doc.....wish i could help but I think this may be a terminal situation.....anyone who figures this one out is a recording genius in my eyes......

BTW, It's still thursday here....You australian guys are from the future........I would have supspected that you would have the answer :D

How's it feel to be a time traveler....You are talking to me....and I'm in the past....wierd huh? Or am I a time traveler? by me talking to you, I am in a sense traveling to the future and when you talk to me you are talking through to the past......there...we are both cosmonauts

sorry for this very sad and completely useless reply :D

Hmmmm, four channels to do the band, coming live off the board...

Idea #1:using monitor sends, aux sends or mixer sub-groups send a stereo drum kit mix to recorder tracks 1 and 2,mono instrument bed to 3 and mono vox to 4.

Idea #2: stereo mix of everything off the board to 1 and 2 with stereo micing of the room to 3 and 4.

Tom

tom's idea #2 is winning so far, but like i said i don't have any great mics for the "room", except perhaps the pzm.... would you guys suggest the pzm and a dynamic, two dynamics....hmmm i just had an idea....

mix from p.a. desk to 1 & 2
dynamic "stage left" to 3
dynamic "stage right to 4
pzm center stage to 3 & 4*

this is a pretty risky move, do you guys think it'lll work??

Tom's #2. But I'd want to be doing it from a completly different room so you have a chance to actually hear your stereo board mix.

thing is it'll be set and forget, because my arse is gonna be on one of those drum thrones!!!

the recording isn't of that great an importance, just something to remember the jam by....going to do some setting up later tonight (friday)

thanks for your help so far guys

dr. colossus (somewhere in the future :D)

i'll bet you'll be worshipping a throne by the night through!

:D:D:D

How about:

track1: 1 drum set, 0ne bass, one guitar, pan left
track2: 1 drum set, 1 bass, one guitar, pan right
track 3: keys and final guitar, pan center
track 4: all vox, pan center

This could sound huge if the relative levels are OK on each track.

i would go with tom's #2 idea. are there any music stores with a rental department nearby? or sound contracting companies? before i bought my condensers i used to rent them all the time.

<thing is it'll be set and forget, because my arse is gonna be on one of those drum thrones!!! >

In that case, stereo mic the stage, and a track of the vocals, same as the house mix...oops. Is there anyone to man the pa and watch the levels?

here's what i did!

track 1: from p.a. desk
drums (a)
vocals
bass
organ
percussion

track 2: from p.a. desk
drums (b)
vocals
bass
secondary vocals

track 3: mics to recording desk
guitar (a)
guitar (b)
pzm

track 4: mics to rec desk
guitar (a)
guitar (c)
pzm

we monitored a little back through the p.a. and everything seemed to be "there".... it was a great night..... i'll post some pics and clips soon

We should have assigned the vocal to a single track only.

But i had a great night thanks for the help Dr and thanks for the moonshine....OUCH!!! MY HEAD!! :D:D:D
