I have a PC that is running Win98SE. And after spending $280.00 on a new Fostex MR-8, it seems that I don't have a driver to run it. I've tried just about everything I know how to do, and I'm really getting frustrated. I downloaded the latest software updates from fostex.com, and I've searched the FAQ's here and there. Does anyone know where I could download a driver so that my PC will recognize my MR-8? I have a trial version of Goldwave and a soundcard, so in theory, I could plug my unit into my soundcard and record the bounced 7>8 tracks to a Goldwave file, but I really don't want to have to do it that way. And I'm not even sure if it would record as a stereo file, or just mono. I'm new to PC recording, and new to this site, so if someone could help me out, I would really appreciate it. Thanks and have a great day :)

The typical PC conenction is via USB. Is that what you are using now?, I believe the minimum version of Windows for this to work is Windows ME (page 88 of MR-8 manual). It's not clear that Win98 SE is supported for this action.

USB support is hit or miss with W98. As I understand it, with the MR8, mostly miss. Pick up a CF Card Reader and I think you'll be all set. Many, if not all, will work with W98. One that I know for sure will is the ZIO.

Thanks for the advice. I called around and found a card-reader for $30. That's not much to pay to be able to get me going, so I think I'll just buy that.

win 98

win 98 and 98SE usb connections are NOT supported, its in the manual.... all win 98 users need to use a card reader.....

I've seen card readers as low as $5.95.

It's the easiest solution even if you have Win XP Pro. :D

I agree that card readers are the way to go! I use W2k with a card reader since I do all my tracking in one room, and mix in another. Much easier to carry the flash card around than the mr8!

Hey gkirksooner--One thing that wasn't mentioned....you'll need to grab a copy of Fostex's WavManager program off their website. Use it to import tracks to the pc, or export tracks to the flash card.

Yeah, I downloaded that program. I guess I have a couple more questions though....If I use the card-reader instead of just buying Windows XP(which I wouldn't mind buying), would I be able to do the same things when uploading, or would I be missing out on some features? And if so, what features or functions could I use if I used the direct-connect via USB after buying XP, that I can't use with the card-reader? Also, to the guy who said they had seen card-readers for $5.99----Where did you see that or what would be a good place to check other than say....Buy.com?

I'm not absolutely certain, since I've always just used the card reader, but I'm quite sure that there is no difference in functionality.

Edit: Do you have the manual for the mr-8? If not, you can download a pdf copy from fostex. Also, there's a pdf manual that comes with the wavmanager program.

card reader

there is no difference, just two different ways to access the files.....BOTH use wav manager, while with the card reader you can take track off and on the card without the wav manager program, if you do any punching in or skipping around on the position of the song when you record, the timelines will not line up unless you use the wav manager
