Newbie here with some questions about building a computer mostly for recording but also for some general use. I currently own a Gateway Solo 9300cs Laptop that I use everyday for school and general stuff. It has given me a few problems in the past and I really want to build a desktop to take some of the load off of the Gateway. But, I also want to get into recording however I have never recorded before so Im unsure of how much time and dedication I will put into it and how creative I will be with my music. Ive been playing guitar for 7 years and Im definately serious about music. I just recently got the "itch" for recording. Taking this in mind I dont want the best, most expensive hardware and software until I know Im gonna stick w/ recording. OK, here goes:
The main question I have is what motherboard/CPU to go with?? Up until now I was really set on a P4 system, maybe a 2.0ghz, and an ASUS motherboard, something basic nothing really fancy. Lately Ive been doing some research on here and noticed that alot of guys use Athlon and other CPU's instead of Pentiums. Any advantage of one over the other. Also, on the "System Requirements" list on most major software titles Ive always noticed the sentence "Pentium xxx mhz or higher". Are Athlon processors considered compatible with the software that calls for Pentiums or what???
Another question: I know you guys hear this alot but what soundcard should I get?? Recall, I dont want to invest in an m-audio audiophile and then realize Im not gonna use it much. What can I use that will get me by for a little while but wont make my music sound like sh*t. I realize I will have to get an external mixer as well. Also, say I were to get an audiophile sound card-do you have to get a separate sound card for like games and other windows programs or does the audiophile take care of that too??
Im really set on building a computer so Im not considering a
4/8-track or anything like that to try out recording.
Really sorry this turned into a novel. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me!!
