What's up Peoples,

I'm looking at re-doing my recording studio system. Right now I use a Mackie CFX-12 and I run all my instruments(motif 6, mpc2000xl, few guitars, mics) though it. Then from the mixer it goes into a Darla 20 which is recorded into Samplitude 24/96.

Now what i want to do is keep the same setup pretty much, but for mixing and mastering I would like to go out of the sound card into another mixer which would go into another computer. So I would have 2 computer systems: 1 for the initial recording, then the 2nd one for recording out of the 1st one but mixing it down with another mixer.

For this set-up I know I will need some sound cards with several outs and ins. I'm looking at the Delta 1010 and Layla24.

Can anyone suggest which sound card would be betta or give me another scenario that would be betta than having 2 computer systems for recording. I just get tired of using the mouse for mixing down stuff, except for using plug-ins. I have heard of a few midi controllers that are compatible with Samplitude.
Any suggestions?????

Thanks Alot

Instead of getting another computer, it would probably easier to just upgrade the soundcard. (either Delta 1010, Layla24, or something similar) These cards would give you 8ins/8outs.

I'm not sure what you mean by hating to use the mouse but I assume it has to do with faders, EQ, panning. Using one of the above soundcards, you can make one computer do the work of the two you suggested.

Example:

Plug your instruments into your CFX-12. Use a patch cable or balanced cable to plug into the channel insert of each Channel strip you have an instrument on and have that go to the soundcard 1-6in. Set up tracks in samplitude to record from the soundcard line-in 1-6.

You now have dry recordings for each track. Now connect soundcard line-outs 1-6 to empty channel line-ins on your CFX-12. If you want mono tracks, only use the L input of a stereo channel. Connect main outs on the CFX-12 to your soundcard line-in 7-8. Set up Samplitude to record from line-in 7-8 and you have your stereo mix on a seperate track.

This makes the mixer and your computer work double duty and saves you the aches and pains of setting up a new computer and a new mixer. I think this is what you're trying to accomplish.

DANG Man You hit that right on point

Hey I appreciate it,

That is exactly what I wanted to do. I kinda hate using the mouse to adjust the faders, eq's, etc. Plus I want to use some outboard gear like compressors, efx, that I don't have plug-ins for. When I listen to music during the mix down I like to close my eyes and try to really feel the music. With the mouse I can't make adjustments, but with the external mixer I could.

Which do you think would be better getting the Delta 1010 or the Layla24??

Also would it be better if I used a dual processor board 2x1.3ghz or a single 2ghz processor??

Thanks In Advance

I can only recommend the Layla24 since that's the only card I own although there are many people here that have had great results using the Delta. I've had no problems running on my 1.8Ghz intel board.

As far as the processor goes, I would just get a single processor MB. That's really just presonal preference though since the stuff I record doesn't need an insane amount of number crunching power. I would also recommend getting as much RAM as possible up to 512MB if you don't have it already.
