so i am so new to this i would be pair with a baby still in the womb!!!!

this is what i am wanting to get out of this whole home studo thing.

i am a junior and plan to major in theatre and minor in music. i would love it i would have the very basics so that i can record my voice and maybe have the option of a piano and or guitar. my main intrust is doing a cappela music. as in the songs where they do everything with their voice.

what i am looking for is a list of the very basic equiment that i need to get things done.

thank you very much!!!!!!!

is there like a special mic or what kind do you recomend. i would like to get stuff that would be compatible with better/higher quality stuff. if your pickin up what im putting down :)

Not really.

There is a world of difference between "basic" and "better/higher quality".

Welcome to the boards.

Two questions...

1. What's your budget?
2. Do you want to record to a computer or tape?

Are you just archiving your performance history, or is there a greater commercial goal in mind? Get a camcorder IMO. All the mic and video most folks need. Otherwise you could spend thousands and never have what you need on a particular day of the week. If you just want audio, a Zoom H# recorder should suit most needs. H1, H2, H4(n), and other options out there. Marantz, Sony, Edirol, ..... Your cell phone probably does most of what most folks need done these days. Now if you want to step it up to something on par with broadcast standards or commercial CDs, that's a different story. And can be quite UN-simple / UN-basic.

well.... i have about a $500 budget

i would like to make some nice quality CDs / youtube videos

once again my main goal is to be able to do a cappella vocal songs. from what i have learned you have to record your voice over and over to get all the layers. but i have really no idea......

Yo 4ewe. Are you in the USA? Prices are very different in different countries.
OK- read this thread:

and my posts here:

I won't kid you- your budget is pretty weak. People have a lot of different definitions of what a "nice CD" is. I assure you, my version can't be made for $500. You tube video? Hopefully the video equipment isn't part of that $500. Anyway- the threads I linked to above have other links, with pictures, prices, and options. It should, at least, tell you what you are trying to do, and some of the problems and pitfalls about getting there. Good Luck-Richie

$500 would be pushing it for a decent camcorder. But it can be done. HD2000 (if you can still get one) plus a $100 camcorder mic. Not exactly commercial quality, but it should do youtube pretty well.

Layering yourself isn't exactly a cappella. Are you looking to do something like pomplamoose? Or something less involved? With video at the time of laying down the audio? Or to be lip synced later? Many means to an end. Multi-tracking will run you at least $100 for a decent interface. And all of that is without a mic stand, cable, mic, pop filter, shock mount, pixie dust, and whatever else...
