We are trying to figure out how to get 3 instruments (bass, steel guitar & keyboard) and 2 vocal mics into the computer. We're a "live" group and have never attempted anything like this before, so I have no clue where to even start.

We have a Behringer PMH5000 mixer and Cakewalk PC Music Pack software. We ran the instruments through the mixer and into the computer via USB, but (1) the sound quality was horrible and (2) we aren't able to seperate the tracks, so we threw our hands up and are coming to you for help.

What do we need to get the instruments and vocals into the computer all at one time as we're playing? We'd rather not do one instrument at a time if we can help it.

I'm totally lost and could really use your help!

Do you have a laptop or desktop? Also, if you name your budget, it'll be easier for people to suggest specific products.

We are using a Dell Desktop.

As for budget, we don't really have one. We want to get good equipment and spend as little as possible - that's about the only budget that we have.

We just need to know what we need, where to get it and how to set it up.

Someone in the Cakewalk forum here could probably tell you if you can record five tracks at a time with the software you have. I know Sonar, Cubase and Tracktion all do - the one I use is Tracktion and you can download a demo version here.

Then you need an interface with at least five inputs. This would fill the bill or with this you can get some free extras if you buy it soon.

Mics, mic stands, headphones and speakers will round out the package. And hey! You'll be makin' MUSIC!
