Need grill for Audio-Technica ATM41

Good day.

I bought an Audio-Technica ATM41 more than 20 years ago and it has served me well as both a vocal mic and guitar amp mic. I made the mistake of loaning it to a friend for an extended period and when it came back, the top half of the wire mesh grill was missing and had been replaced by a similar-but-not-quite grill that had been stuck on with electrical tape. Obviously this has affected the sound of the mic but the thing won't stay together without the tape.

I contacted Audio-Technica and was told it would cost more than $65 CDN for a replacement grill.

The local music stores have Shure-type replacements which are inexpensive but too big.

So my question is this: Does anyone know where I can get a replacement grill for my ATM41 for not too much money?

Or, does someone perhaps have a junked ATM41 or similar that they would like to sell me for a few bucks?

Thanks.

AT might still have replacement screens for that mic. I ordered some ATM29 screens and they had them and that mic is pretty old too. :)

Yikes! You can buy the whole mic used for less than 65 CDN.

$65 CDN sounds more like the cost for them to do the repair, check the mic over, etc. If that's really the amount they want just to mail you a new grille, they're ripping you off very badly....

Do you have detailed measurements for the grille? Are you sure it's really the wrong grille? The grille may have simply been probably glued into place. I've seen that sometimes for that style of grille.

I just saw this. Who did you contact exactly? We just ordered half a dozen for about that price from AT.

Re.: ATM41 grill

Wow....I am impressed by the number of responses. Thanks.

First of all: Kid Klash-- I did check e-bay, lots of mics, no grills. Probably not worth it to someone to put just a grill up for sale.

hoops-- Yes they have them, it's the cost that is the issue.

dgatwood-- Yikes indeed. If I was going to invest $65 in a mic I would spend some more and get an entirely new one, probably a Shure SM57 (if I can keep away from the counterfeits!!). And yes, it's definitely the wrong grill, different style and size of mesh, etc.

hoops-- I went to the contact page and clicked on the Canada section, then e-mailed one of those stores. I got a reply from the following:

Judith Dugas
agent au dept. de service aux pièces / parts order desk at the service dept
for ERIKSON AUDIO & PRO division
JAM Industries Ltd., 21000 Trans-Canadienne
Baie-d'Urfé, Québec, H9X 4B7

When you say you ordered a half dozen for that price, do you mean each or for all of them?? Because $11 each is very reasonable and I would grab one in a second if I could.

Not of that particular model. But yes all of them. Have you tried any other grills from AT on your mic? You may not have to get that particular model.

When I e-mailed customer service at A-T I said I needed a grill for that particualr mic, and that is the response I got. Surely if there was another one that fit they would have let me know?

Ya I forgot that the shape of the grill will change the sound. Its like the SM 58 & 57. They both have the same element but the different grill gives it the different sound.
