Hi, new to these forums and to computer recording in general, been reading lots of threads and have found lots of useful advice from people. Now I'm after a little feedback on the set up I'm considering using to record, if there's any obvious mistakes I'm making, any misunderstandings that I have about the way things work, or if any of the equipment I've decided on is not all that good.

I'm writing stuff that could be considered a hybrid between metal, drum and bass, and jazz, using software to create drum loops and recording bass, guitar, vocals, keys and trumpet over the top of that. My pc is brand new with all the bells and whistles, running windows vista 64-bit. I'll be using Ableton Live 7 most likely, possibly Cubase.

I'll be running my guitar and bass through a Line 6 POD X3 Live effects board, also I'll be using a SE2200 large diaphram condensor mic to record vocals and trumpet and running them through the board as well. I'll then be running a line out of the board into a Presonus Firebox then through firewire into my pc. For midi I'm thinking about getting an Edirol PCR300 Midi Controller and also running that through the Firebox.

Is there anything that I'm missing with that set up? Equipment all sound good or are there pieces that don't sound good? The mic, Line 6 board and midi controller all come recommended to me I don't know much about different brands so I'm going by reviews and advice.

Thanks in advance for reading such a long winded post and for any advice :)

The technical aspects of the proposed setup are all correct. Only thing I would be careful of is matching the 2200 with the trumpet as you've described above. Unless it's a good 5-6 feet away, this is asking for trouble. You might try sticking an SM58 right in front of the trumpet instead.

Sounds like some good gear to get started - post your results in the mix clinic!
