I am pretty ignorant as far as mic specs go. With my Tascam 424, I've primarily used a Shure SM-57 with mixed results. A friend lent me his AKG C1000 S condenser mic and it gave me much improved results. I've only tested acoustic and vocal, but both were much clearer and more satisfactory.
Now for the question: can I get a decent/similar condenser mic for the $150-250 range? What brand/model? Are these mics better for quieter sounds (acoustic/vocal) but not so much for louder (electric guitar/bass)? You don't have to bother with the last question if you can provide any insight into which ones I might consider buying. But the more you want to type, the better. :)
Thank you.

I would recommend an Oktava MC012 as a good mic for instruments and vocals. In fact, you can even upgrade it later to a proper vocal mic by getting an M1 large diaphragm capsule.
The MC012 is slightly above your range at $280 ... but it is a great mic.

Hey BigKahuna!
You're stealing my job from me here!

Just kidding...

I think you all know I agree; unless he's not planning to buy another mic for years down the road or if ever. Then I'd suggest an NT-1.

Watch-out though, everyone... When I get my DaviSound DS-1950s and if I like them, I'll be known around here for promoting those too; don't worry, it won't be until around the end of the year (if I do like them ofcourse).
