Need assistance evaluating these three monitor pairs, please?

Hello, friends...

I am in need of a pair of active reference monitors (I have a really small room, by the way) for use in mixing. I record using a simple Boss BR-1180CD.

I am in the market for very inexpensive monitors, and have narrowed my search down to the two following. I wonder if I could please have some advice and guidance...thumbs up and down...on the following:

MAudio StudioPhile SP-5B

Event TR5-N

Also, if anyone has any further suggestions in the $300 range, (or less!), I would certainly be willing to consider them as well. I have read TONS of posts on this bulletin board, in various threads, and that is how I narrowed my selection down to the above named two, low budget considered. The less expensive the better, but currently I am using either headphones (yuk) or my computer speakers (very yuk). My computer sound system is a fairly decent NEC sound system, but all I get when attempting to mix is distortion, distortion, distortion.

I'm out of money, but have a credit card. What a way to begin the new year! :rolleyes:

I'd be most grateful for the monitor-related thoughts.

I just picked up the Tr5Ns and am very pleased with them. I can't compare with other monitors, as this was a first time purchase for me. But they are quiet, clean, powerful, and well built. Being 5" woofers, they may lack in bass response compared to a set of 8" monitors, but for the money, they're pretty solid.

For the money, within your budget, the Yorkville passives will give you a good sound. Price, depending on shipping, will run between 90 & 100 dollars each. The active Yorkvilles are a bit more.

You can get Yorkville on the net and they will give you the name of the dealer closest to you.

I'm looking in that $300 range, because...well, frankly...I need to pay as little as possible for not an OPTIMAL sound, but an acceptable sound for inexpensive reference monitors. Otherwise, I'd shoot for those Yorkvilles. I have read great reviews on this board with regard to them. But at $100 more than the others I've narrowed to, I'll have to pass.

Heck...$300 is $300 more than I have to spend, so...

I have the YSM-1's too. You can get a pair for way less than $300.

Actually, I read a very negative review of those Tannoy's, but then again...one can read good and bad reviews of anything out there, I suppose.

Trick would be to get out and listen to a bunch with a CD of your own stuff, maybe?

MAudio and Studiophile make nice pairs with excellent reviews here on this board, for $300 a pair each. Both are powered, so no extra amp is necessary.
 
I use the Yorkvilles too and am quite happy with them.
 
Oh ok, i hadnt read many reviews yet, i just wanted to offer another alternative, i think i may look into the maudio or events as well!
