Looking for a pro tools version that will suit my needs...
I'm looking to do midi editing/sequencing for live use..
I'm not looking for a full blown recording suite, but I do need the widest availability of virtual instrument plugins..
Possibly an older version of pro tools that has the midi capabilities, the add on option of plugins, I'm running windows 7...
Looking to get the best value, without losing the needed features..
What is the oldest version of pro tools that will work with windows 7?
I do not plan on playing any live instruments ever with this ...
I do have the keystudio 49, and the pro tools SE software, but not having the option to add on more virtual instruments forces me to change the software..
Any help would be appeciated

Why Pro Tools?

It's certainly capable of the things you mention but there are other suites which are better geared towards midi sequencing, and to be honest, they have a much better workflow.

Why can't you use third party instruments with PT SE? Is that another one of their ridiculous limitations?

Any one I know doing synth/loop/beat based music is using ableton or similar.

I'd second Steenamaroo's suggestions - If your main aim is to do MIDI sequencing/editing/virtual instruments, Pro Tools is capable, but not the "slickest". In order to use VST instruments (many of which are free) , you'd have to jump thru some hoops to make them work in PT. PT's strength is audio / editing / mixing; I'd check out Abelton, Reason, Studio One 2, etc. -any DAW that natively runs VST's. Good luck!

REAPER | Download <-- Does everything that even the newest version of Pro-Tools does...and it costs 60 bucks....and runs on Windows 7...and washes your car. Like those guys said - consider looking outside of the ProTools restriction - for what you describe, it sounds like an unnecessary hassle (for older versions) and/or expense (for newer ones).

thanks for the advice..
So, if I put a gun to your head, Cubase or Studio One?

I use Cubase, too - always have. Studio One looks interesting from what I've seen, but I've never used it, so I can't say... I've never actually seen anybody use it in real life, for that matter.
