I need some advice on using the built-in compression feature on my VF-16. I'm mixing down (4) drum tracks and don't really like the sound I'm getting but don't really know where/how to adjust the variables.

I might be using the compression wrong or it might be a lousy compressor in the first place.

I've got (4) tracks - 2 o/h mics, 1 snare, 1 kick.

The stock compression setting makes things sound better but it sounds like it washes in & out depending on the sound level.

Any advice ?

Thanks, jb.

Try using just a little bit at first. Like hardly any...then work your way up until it is sounding good.
It is not the best compressor but it does work if you use it in small quanities.
Hope this helps.

Anytime you are recording Transients i.e Percussion you have to remember their dynamic range try setting the threshold higher and set a faster attack and release because these Tranients are of rapid occurance short and fast and then try to adjust the ratio a little bit at a time then your drum sound should make a noticable difference
