Need advice on using soft synth keyboard

Hey folks. Could anyone help me with recording midi using a soft synth keyboard in Sound Forge 6.0? Or in any application I suppose as I use Sonar 2.2 as well and I assume(ignorantly)that most recording programs are similar.
Whenever I try to record with the keyboard I find that you cannot play the keyboard while the record window is open. There must be something small that I'm missing I guess as this is the only problem with using these applications that I have. I have tried to use help but I find they're very vague in their explanation.
Some help with this would be very very much appreciated. Thanks much.
 
Be sure the track you are trying to record on is record-enabled (for Live Input). You have to do this by enabling a little button on the track lane in the arrange window. Also be sure that the track is setup to recieve input from your specific controller (And that the track is set to recieve on the same MIDI channel as your controller is set to output).
