Hi,

I am new to the world of recording music onto my computer. I have recently tried to record a song using cubase SX and although the vocals sounded pretty clear, the elector-acoustic guitar which was pluggged directly in to the SB AUdigy card of the computer was very bad quality with a LOT of background hiss. I realise this was not a good setup with no guitar signal processing equiptment.

Since then I have been researching equipment that will allow me to record songs onto a PC with Cubase SX. I have been looking at getting 2 MXL603s mics for micing the acoustic guitar. For vocals i will either try recording them with these mics or use something like a sony ecm909 which i already have.

Then I am going to need to connect these to the computer. Now i was looking at a mixer which has a minimum of 2 mic inputs with phantom power and preamps. I saw the Yamaha MG10/2 which looked reasonable priced with 4 mic preamps and phantom power for £75 (~$120). Is this a decent mixer? I would like to know whether or not it would be possible to input the guitar directly into this mixer, i expect not.

But If i did go for this setup, i will need to connect the mixer into the computers soundcard. Will any basic soundcard with 1 input do for this type of setup, or do i need to spend some money on a good one? If so, any cheap but good quality suggestions?

The other option as far as I see it is going for an external soundcard/mixing device like the Cubase System-4. The problem with this is that it comes with cubase which i already have. So are there any better/similar alternatives which would give me at least 2 mic inputs with preamps and phantom power? I would prefer 3 or more mic inputs so i could record good acoustic guitar and vocals at the same time. Also, I would like to be able in the future to add a keyboard to the mixer/soundcard (i THINK that this requires a MIDI input) so preferably it would have a MIDI input.

Another question is whether or not there is a distinct advantage of going with an external soundcard device in that when using cubase, will all the sources be recorded seperately?? whereas if i were to use an external mixer into the 1 input of a soundcard, i could only record the 1 stream with all the different inputs in at once.

If anyone can answer any questions that I have posed I would be VERY grateful. It has taken a long time for me to research what I have done at the moment, having had no experience in this arena before.

Many thanks,
James
