I need a recording soundcard around 100 bucks. Don't know whether to do internal or external (see my earlier posts) and I'm worried cause usb 2.0 is on the way out with 3.0 having arrived, and pci is starting to be old tech (pci x pci-e etc)

M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 would be an excellent choice, strictly with editing in mind but if you're looking for something with preamps etc, you'll need another $100.
M-AUDIO - Audiophile 2496 - 4-In/4-Out Audio Card with MIDI and Digital I/O

Thanks. This was actually the card I had almost already bought. Right now I've got an x-fi xtreme audio gamer card. I couldn't get Asio4all working with it and besides, I'd rather have a nicer card. Thanks again for the reply

Quick update: I returned my other card to newegg because it was malfunctioning. If anyone has anymore suggestions regarding which sound card to get please let me know. (leaning towards the m-audio audiophile 24/96)

I personally prefer externals (I use a Motu828mkII on firewire)

You can get USB interfaces with up to 12-16 independent channels.
Externals are a bit more flexible as you dont have to open up the PC,
scramble behind it to make connections and if anything happens to the computer
you can easily move it to another machine.

You can get usb interfaces from $60 up to $1000 depending on your needs and budget.

Thanks for the tip. I am going to pick up the pci m-audio audiophile 2496 but this guide will come in handy because I will get a usb interface eventually too. Right now I've got a cheap behringer uca-222. It's cheap and can't do more than cd quality but it gets the job done for now. The reason I'm going pci is that my computer is built for it and in a place with quick access to the back. Thanks again because I will read the guide and eventually get myself a nicer usb interface
