I need help!! I'm hooking up my Roland JV1010 to the computer for desktop recording. I connected my Roland 200MKII keyboard midi out to JV1010 midi in and then a RSC-15AT from the JV1010 to the serial port on my laptop. I can't get any signal/sound, nothing!! I don't know what the heck I'm doing wrong? Does a driver need to be downloaded? I tried PC-2, PC-1, and even Mac switch settings on the back of the JV1010. I set the JV1010 to Midi, Perform, etc.. nothing!! Can someone help me please?

Not familiar with the Roland RSC-15AT cable, but your first step should be just to get the controller working with the 1080.

Do you have the controller set to the same midi channel as the 1080? When you play key the controller, does the MIDI led on the 1080 light up?

If yues, then how are you configured to get audio out of the 1080? I assume you have it wired to a mixer or audio interface somewhere?

We need more info to help.

You plug your controller into the computer Midi in, and computer midi out to the JV, Make sure you have monitoring on so you can hear what your playing

The RSC-15AT is a 9 pin d-sub cable and the other end is a serial port cable. The controller is set to the same midi channel. I can get midi signal through the unit (the light does come on every time I hit a key). I guess where I'm confused is that the manual says in order to hook up the serial port you have to switch the setting on the 1010 to PC1 or PC2 for a computer connection so it's almost as if I'm not using MIDI anymore. Really confusing. I'm not using audio interface, I'm unfamiliar with that. Is it an actual unit or software? Thank you for your help!

My computer has no MIDI IN and OUT ports. This is where I'm stuck. I'm using the serial port.

I haven't used the 15AT, but I think it is for controlling the 1080 (in fact, it sounds like it is an alternative to MIDI), not for audio output. You still need to send the 1080 audio outs somewhere.

So, there are several approaches people use when recording a system like this. All involve an audio interface, which is how you will get audio in and out of your computer.

NOTE: audio is NOT MIDI, and MIDI is not audio (just in case you weren't clear with that).

1) route the output to a mixer and take the mixer's stero output and/or/ buss outs to the computer's audio interface.

2) route the 1080 output directly to a mixer and then to the audio iterface as above.

How were you intending to get the audio in and out of you computer? Which DAW softrware are you using?

Get one of these and ditch the PC adapter cable. I couldn't get mine to work via serial port either.

You'll need an additional pair of MIDI cables to have MIDI IN and OUT of the 1010. Set the JV1010 to MIDI. In your recording software select the MIDIsport as your MIDI source. This is a handy little device that will make your life easier. :)

I'll assume for the moment you are monitoring with headphones through the 1010's phone output. MIDI is data only, stuff like NoteOn, NoteOff, Pitch, Modulation, PatchNumber, etc. The audio outputs or the headphone output needs to be accessed if you want to hear the JV1010s' sounds.

I'm using the serial port.

My guess is the serial port was only supported under win98 (I have seen other roland gear like this)

Just get a 1x1 or 2x2 midi interface
