Need a pre/DI to beef up kick and Bass

So what I want is a Drawmer 1969 but I just don't have that kind of budget. That said what I have now for pre amps are
Aphex 107
dmp3
focusrite trackmaster
into a Studiomaster P7 board. The trackmaster isn't too bad for the price but I was hoping to find something w/ tubes (God help me) that I can afford.
$750 seems to be my budget and I have no problem buying used.
I don't see any Peavey VMP-2's for sale but I hear that might be a good choice. Any thoughts on an old Ampex 350 tape machine pre amp? They seem to see for a decent price. Last thought maybe a HHB Radius 50.
I could sure use some guidence.

I record many kinds of music but I'd like to get a nice fat rock sound.
BTW I have a Sennheiser 421, and a 602e for kick mics.

i use an audix D-6 into a great river ME-1NV and thats pretty fat. however, ywo things that are giving me a huge kick sound have nothing to do with that set up. I built (for $30.00) the recordermans 8" speaker mic fo the front of my kick (it goes through a crappy tube pre dbx376) and it brings in so much thunder in the ultra sub fregencies very easy to make BTW. and also I built a small (I mean very small) riser my kit sets up on. (plywood with 2x4's on end) its about 4" high. the space under the riser emphisises the kick in my mono room mic. (I dont have a great room, so you might) Anyway, those combo's lend to a healthy kick.

a great combo for you would be that 421 inside of the kick and a speaker mic on the front before committing to an expensive pre. or have you tried the 421 inside and the 602e just peaking into the front hole?....let me say, I realize my GR pre is doing a great job, however when I ran my Audix d6 through ch 1 of my dmp3 and the speaker mic through ch. 2 I did still get a usable phat kick sound. I know pre's make some difference but a good mic combo inside out can do wonders!

I've forgoten about the speaker in front of the bass drum idea. Did you wire a cable from the speaker to a XLR plug? If so, any special wiring diagram?

If you can't get a beefy kick sound with the E602 then I would be looking at your kit and technique. That mic has massive low end.

Plug a cable (I don't know if a speaker or instrument cable would be better suited for the job) into the input of a passive DI box, and then run the XLR out of the DI into your pre.
