Hello, I am a musucain and would like a new soundcard for doing demos at home. I would probably only need 2 inputs, I would also need midi.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

There are tons of threads on this subject. I posted in some of them latest yesterday.

Ok thnaks
Does anyone know if the 2496 has a phantom power capabilities?

Don't know if it has, probably not, you'll be better off buying a good seperate pre-amp anyway. I think except for that the 2496 (I take it you are talking m-audio) might be a good card for you indeed.

The M-Audio Audiophile 2496 does not provide preamps, far less phantom power. Nor does the Emu 1212M. The M-Audio 1010LT provides preamps, but no phantom power.

For bottom dollar functionality with downstream expandability I would look at either the 1010LT or 1212M. The 1010LT is $30 more, but provides you with two solid preamps (I am using a Shure SM7B and it works fine). The 1212M is considered to have better converters. The 1010LT has eight ins (two balanced w/preamp, 6 unbalanced) and eight outs (all unbalanced) right off the get go, the 1212M comes with two in (no preamps), two out, ADAT and a FireWire port; both have S/PDIF and MIDI.

If you need preamps with phantom power I would suggest a 1212M and a M-Audio DMP-3... about $350 out the door. If you do not need phantom power, get the 1010LT for about $230.
