I want to buy a good multitrack recorder to go along with my mixer. I have a Behringer MX2442A Eurodesk Mixer. Now all I need is a recorder. I will be recording my band which means I would like to record at least 10 tracks simultaneously. Of course this recorder needs to be able to hook into an analog recorder, and I would like one with a hard drive. Pleaes tell me your suggestions, I am fairly new at this and I would appreciate the help. Thanks.

Yo Doug "da" Drumma:]

I would suggest you examine the Yamaha 4416 or the 2816.

The 4416 has 16 faders; the one I use, the 2816, has 8 faders which are doubled up; both units have auto/faders and the sound is very good for the money. 2816 is a few bucks cheaper; 4416 has been updated and is a good unit. I really enjoy my 2816 but it took some time to learn how to navigate the unit. Without prior experience on several multitracks, I would have been in a padded cell.

Since the 2816 and 4416 are DAW units, you can rest your mixer.

Good reverbs on the 2816. Easy to burn CDR/CDRW discs. Probably the easiest part of the unit.

Keep twiddling the dials and look over as many units as possible. I can vouch for the sound quality of the 2816.

Green Hornet :D :D :p :p :p

PS: If you buy a 2816/4416, you will need to buy a USP back-up power supply. If you are recording and lose power, it could screw up the hard drive and you will lose data. That unit is not expensive and well worth the safety if provides. Mine will give me eleven minutes to shut down my unit properly; it takes only 20 seconds to do the shut down sequence.

oh god

the dreaded shut down sequence

im glad i dont have to deal with that any more

with akai the protocol is: press on/off button

I looked at the Yamaha but how would I hook all my instruments to the workstation, like all of the drum microphones which have XLR inputs. The 4416 only has 2 XLR inputs and I have about 6 microphones to plug in. Is there something I'm not getting here that would allow me to do this?

I'm not fully familiar with your eurodesk. I presume it is 24 channels, 4 sub groups and sterio L and R. How many tape sends are available? If you want to rcord 10 tracks simultaneausly and seperately you will most likely need to buy a 12 or 16 track recorder. I dont know this desk but i doubt it has the capability to send all 10 channels seperately. Most likely you would use the 4 groups as tape sends. If you are doing live recording then you could only realistically record 4 groups like VOx on 1 Guitar on 2 Drums on 3 Bass on 4. Not as flexible but much cheaper

The MX2442A has 16 channel inserts (to go with the 16 XLR's), so you can output the signal of each XLR channel into a multitrack recorder. You will need to find a recorder that accepts 10 inputs to record a 10 tracks simultaneously. There are other options here as well with your subgroups. I can elaborate on that if you wish.

I work with a computer multitrack vs. an external recorder. Would doing your multitracking through a PC be an option for you? If so there are plenty of options for multitrackers there. The expense here would be the sound card (multitrack device) and the software to interface with it (typically Cakewalk, but there are many others).

A 24 channel, 24 bit recorder would fit your needs perfect. But if a 24 channel recorder is out of your budget, there are options. You can look around for used 16 track recorders (fostex d-160 & Akai DR-16 come to mind for the budget-minded). Rackmount seems to be the most reasonable path if you already have a mixer.

or

your PC could serve as a Multi-tracker.
