I'm looking for good quality portable audio recorder. I care nothing about the quality of the built-in microphone since I'll be using an external microphone. My budget is $100 to $150. I like the looks of the Tascam DR-03 but not totally sure how good it is.

I found the Zoom H4n to be far superior than most of them but is about double your stated budget.

But what qualitative difference is there? I don't really need a lot of features. I just need something that's easy to turn on and start recording and that will be reliable. I have been using an Olympus that records in WMA format and has worked fairly well, but is cutting off automatically for some reason. So I need something slightly better quality. I have looked at all of the recorders by Tascam and Zoom and I really can't tell much difference between the entry-level model and the more expensive models, except for additional features that may not be useful to different users. So really, what I'm asking is, is a lower end model sufficient if I don't need special effects, or a better microphone, or whatever else distinguishes a much more expensive model from a cheaper one?

What are you looking for with your end project?
I mean are you going to mix it then make a CD or just want in in the portable to listen to?

I'm trying to record sermons. I will be putting the recordings on CD as well as maybe make them into podcasts.

Why is that one better than the Tascam recorder I mentioned? Do you think Zoom is a better brand?

Well I really like my zoom H4n for it's flexibility and I'm not sure about the tascam model ... so I can't talk apples to apples here.

To record our sermons we just go straight to laptop then burn it to CD plus put it right on the church website.
