I play hardcore music in the vein of Sepultura, Fearfactory, etc. I'm a guitarist with no band. I record all the time but my music lacks the live punch that a real drummer can deliver. Fear Factory use electronic drums for all their recordings...and it is all sequenced based. The drummer in the band does the sequencing for recording but plays the stuff live when on tour. I'm on the verge of something really great if I could just get my hands on something that would provide me with a killer hard rock sound. I have two drum machines that can get it but it takes so much to just sequence a 3 minute song. I have a very powerful computer with a SB Live Platinum soundcard so I don't know if I should look at software based stuff or to keep digging and wasting my money on machines that sound too much like a machine. I need help. I have so much music inside of me that when I finally do get one good drum track down, I can usually record 3 or 4 complete songs on the fly...it just comes to me...and in all of the span of about 45 minutes. My friends all dig my stuff and wonder why I don't have a band and most of the guys at the music stores accuse me of recording my music in a real studio when in fact I do it all at home on a Tascam Porta 2 4 track! I love music and making it and don't care if I ever had a real band because it is about me and my artistic expression and personal enjoyment. But every time I hear a song that I record, I hear what could have been if the darn machine could just read my mind and give me a good break here and there. So, and I know this has been too long already, what do I need in an electronic drummer?

Go to the Rocket Network now! You can use the public studios for free and download the necessary software for free(Emagic).
Rock On!

dude, you are speaking my kind of language. i would love to be able to help you, but drummers of any kind are scarce where i'm from so you could have the same affliction i do. JJ here, vocalist from (see left) Maine. Fear Factory was an inspiration to me, and I just won a bid for a Boss Dr-550mkII. I've also used Sonic Foundry's AcID and many people here like FruityLoops as well, you may want to try those, or just record your good ideas to a click track and work out better beats later. Try to separate out parts of a song that you want drums for and don't put in any fills the first time you record. Keep in touch. You can love your dog but don't LOVE your dog.

Drum machines are cool. They don't wig out, bitch, or sleep with your girlfriend. They don't drink your beer. Then again, drum machines can't help you bang gear.

:D

I'm sure you don't need it, but just in case you'd like some basic tips on drum machine programming (including some info on how to make it easier), there's an article on my web site:

Good luck!
