I just need a really cheap solution for recording some bass grooves; What's a cheap direct box that doesn't sound like total crap?

If you just need a DI and that's it, then for dirt cheap it's tough to go wrong with a Whirlwind.

If you need something to amplify the signal as well, then I'd say grab an ART Tube MP. It really shines as a DI for bass guitar. I can't say enough good things about it.

If you want something that models the sound of playing through an amplifier, then the Sansamp Bass Driver is pretty stellar. Very versatile in the kinds of sounds you can get with it. Can't say enough good things about that one, either.

Will the signal come thru pretty strong with a cheap Whirlwind?

What do you want to use it for and what preamps do you already have?

I just need to be able to send a bass line into my mixer for recording; I own a Symetrix 302 dual preamp system, a RNP, and the preamps on my Mackie 1604 board

The Whirlwind should do you fine. DOD also makes some cheapies that aren't too bad.

Is there anyway to make those Whirlwinds rack-mountable?
