Hey all, I'm looking for a large diaphragm condenser mic for vocals and acoustic guitar for home recording. I don't have room treatment up yet, but I do have an Editor's Keys portable vocal recording 'booth', which actually seems to work pretty well. I'd like to get a condenser because I want to get some of that sensitive condenser mic kind of sound, but I don't want it to be so sensitive I can hear the fly farting in the corner. I'm also on a tight budget, under $200, and would love multiple pickup patterns if possible (but it's not critical). Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have the Sontronics STC-2. That has a 20dB pad and a high pass filter.

I cannot find a $ price but Thomann list it at 188 euros.

Dave.

MXL V67G.
No multiple patterns but this is a pretty damned good mic especially at $100. I've used it on vocals and acoustic guitar with good results other than I can't sing or play worth a shit.
:)

worth a look...

Audio Technica AT-2020. In around the $100 mark CAD.
Also a good deal, the AT 2041 SP. This is a package of 2 mics. The AT-2020 LD condenser, and the AT-2021 SD. Runs around $200 CAD

I've used both quite successfully for acoustic guitar and the AT-2020 for vocals.

Only advice I can offer about these mics....the highs are a touch on the bright side, but that's easily cured with some EQ.

Sensitivity - like Arc says, you won't find any that are 'less sensitive', but a pad should work for you

Try the AKG Perception 420, has -20dB pad and a low-cut switch - Cardioid, omnidirectional, figure-eight patterns, on sale at Adorama right now for less than $160.

Edited to add: looks like AKG has changed their model line up, the new Perceptions are labeled P220, P420, etc, that's why the deal on the Perception 420 - new old stock.
