If I were to mention an artist's vocals and say I'm trying to record something similar, would you guys be able to tell me the best mic for the job?

I've narrowed it down to an AT4033, MXL V69, or SM7

The vocals I'm trying to record are similar to Gavin Hayes from Dredg. Here's a sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ7oqsB0R4g

If there's any other suggestions in that price bracket, suggest away!

Thanks,
Holden

I would suggest the SM7 1st, the V69 tube mic 2nd.
I would not consider the 4033 under any circumstances. I have one and it is a bright mic that has no real midrange to it. I have T-3 (tube mic) that works really well for vocals that are strong, but a good dynamic will not be as volatile (peaky) to eating the mic and loud to soft variances because of the heavier mic element / magnet combination.

For strongish close miced rock vocals a SM7 works very well.

I would recommend the one that matches best with your voice.

And if it was this very same guy that I was tracking ... then I'd use whatever it is he used on that particular recording. Or something else, so long as it sounded as good or better.

LOL You sure have a flair for stating the obvious.

Specifically for voice, and nothing else? Get the 4033.

If you want to use it for other things, get the SM7.

The MXL isn't even in the same league with the other two, but if you're on a super tight budget then it's a good deal.
