Hi folks,

Does anyone have any experience with the Nady SCM900 large diaphragm condenser that Musician's Friend has for $99? I haven't been able to find any review or other info on it at all.

Thanks,

Karl

Do a search (it's in the upper right hand corner.) Also, what will you be using it for? What other mics do you own?

Thanks for the tip. I searched before I posted. "Nady" turned up a couple of things on nady wireless, and "SCM900" brought up nothing. Unless I'm doing something wrong?

I currently have a couple of SM58s and an ART Tube MP, recording to a Tascam 788. Anyways, I guess I'm looking for a all-around mic (is there such an animal?), since I can only afford a couple hundred at most. The mic would be primarily for vocals and acoustic guitar. I know I can get a C1000S for $199 (and my local music store has the C2000B for the same price), but if the SCM 900 is any good, well, that's another Tube MP or Nady EQ or a patchbay. . .

Well you're absolutly right Mr. Sly (the search function doesn't work like it use to...) Here's the deal, I wouldn't get the SCM900 as an "all-around" mic. You would be much better off with a Rode Nt-1 or one of the AT-models. One of the most important things in a recording setup (and some would say *THE MOST* important thing) is the microphone. I do know that the C1000s is a good mic on guitar, but on vocals I can't really comment. I own two of the SCM900's and they're not "bad" mics, but for studio use I would get something better. I use them mostly for live stereo recording. Hope this helps you out a bit! :)

Thanks for the input. You are the one and only person I have been able to find who knows anything about these mics.

I'm also curious about the AT MB4000C condenser, but I'm beginning to realize that because most everyone feels so strongly about the importance of mics (as well they should), no one is going to have much good to say about $100 mics. I'll just read through the boards and see what I can learn.

One question about the SMC900 -- how would you rate it for vocals? That's about 90% of what I want a condenser for.

Thanks,

Karl

The 9000 or what not isn't to good. If you save just alittle more cah you could get something 10 times better, like the rode or akg.

Well, here's two cents:
I've never heard/used the Nady mic, but I recommended it to a friend recently regardless. I mean, how wrong can you go with a large condenser for $100? (That's rhetorical guys, no need for a response.) You can get more tried & true mics for about $80 more, like the NT-1 or the Marshall line - but if you need more gear, well, save a few bucks. I myself have my eye on the Nady tube condenser that's only $299 clams.

Good luck

I live in the Augusta area, but have lived and still work in Athens on the weekends. How about you?

I live in the Helen area, but my brother lives in Athens. I might be moving there in about 6 months.

KS,

I have no first hand info to give but I'll tell you what I've run across so far on the Nady.

One of my friends has one and says that he can't get it to work.

Another, who has a shure 57 and 58 in his arcenal along with an art mp says the Nady is great and much better than the 57 and 58s.

I personally have a Rode NT1 and an art mp. I was getting a pretty decent vocal sound out of the 58 into the art mp with the 20db gain on before I got the Rode.

In conclusion, make what you want out of this. Just wanted to arm you with some info that I've come across.

Thanks

Thanks, Ray. I am thinking about getting one after all, mainly because of the price. I am reasonably happy with the vocals I've been getting with my 58 and the ART, but having had a condenser before (a C535B), I want to be able to get that open, airy sound again.

Thanks again for the input.
