NADY MICS are really inexpensive but they seem to get pretty good reviews. Is there a reason I should stay away from these microphones? I'm specifically looking at the NADY CM 90 Cardioid Condenser Mic at the moment.

Nady mics have perhaps some of the worst quality control of any pro audio manufacturer anywhere, ever.

If you get a good one, you'll be fine. I believe they're Feilo Shanghai, so it would be kind of like getting a Marshall. But don't expect it to actually work. :D Understand the return policy of whomever you're buying it from.

The Band I work with purchased one of those studio startup kits and it came with some Nady mics for the drummer as well as a AKG 9000 and MXL990.

I have only used the nadys which consist of 4 clip ons, 1 floor mic, and 2 condensors that llok like 603s. Dont know the model number of any of them. But for just recording practices they seem ok. I cant really comment too detail on them because on the monitoring that I use at the practice place.

Oh and I have never used the condensors due to lack of phantom power on the little harddisk recorder they bought.

I bought one of those drum mic kits for like $15 the CM90 condensors were both non functinoing. I fixed one... There was a ring touching the wire coming from the capsule.... yah... bad design there as it kept falling off. I taped it up and the mic works. The other wouldn't open so I threw it away. I haven't actually used it other than to test if it worked.

The rest of the mics are ok. I've used the DM70s on guitar cabinets and on acousitc guitars with some amount of success. The DM80 kick mic worked great on a floor tom. Wasn't too hot at kick though ;)

I would say for live applications, you can't really go wrong with a set of $15 microphones (SP1, SP9, etc). They'll amplify your sound fine, and if they get broken, there's no reason to cry. Heck, your cables will cost more than your mics.

Recording is a whole other issue. Play with one before purchasing, and rent if you can, to get an idea what the sound SHOULD sound like. I simply wouldn't buy without a return policy, because you have no idea how these things will individually run.

The only way to know if the sound will work for you is to try. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

I bought a Navy 900 LD condenser. Slight background noise problem, but I must say that I like the mic and like the sound for voice. I have read about quality issues with this line of mic from other readers; perhaps I was lucky. All I can say is that it sounds very nice and smooth on my voice and I think it was a wonderful deal. I also read a review in Homerecording about the next higher model of this series, and the reviewer, a female singer who expected to dislike the mic, found that she liked it a lot and was very surpised.
Good luck, ES

Actually, Nady mics are not made by Shanghai Feilo Electric Audio. I understand there is a bit of misconception about who Feilo really is.

Feilo Electric Audio is a very old company in China who is known for making headphones, speakers, semi conductors and of course microphones. Several years back the company was split up into a number of separate entities. Some of the engineers left Feilo entirely to start their own businesses and often say they are "Feilo" when in fact they are only former Feilo employee's.

Shanghai Feilo Electric Audio Equipment Co. Ltd. was the only microphone manufacturer to retain the Feilo name.

Just and FYI.

Brain, I see you signed your post with "Feilo USA"... I've never heard of you before, do you have a website? And are you getting your mics from Feilo Electric Audio, or Shanghai Feilo Electric Audio Equipment Co. Ltd, or the engineers who left Feilo entirely?

What's the real name of the business of the engineers who left Feilo entirely to start their own business?

Did you see http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan....htm?session=1317189a61779f4a5ea0059976c33662 ... what do you think about that?

Hey, thanks for correcting me on that one, Brian.

This is all very confusing. Maybe you could clear a few things up for us . . .

Like we know that you guys used to make mics for Marshall, right? Untill they borrowed a few of your people and supposedly started their own manufacturing operation.

The story also goes that Nady and a lot of other guys are having their mics manufactured there, which you say is false. :D So now that our heads are spinning, who is really making these mics for guys like Nady?

And how about Groove Tubes? I'd be really curious to know who's doing theirs.

Thanks in advance. This is kind of cunfusing, but very interesting -- like a soap opera for geeks of cheap mics.

I'm 99% sure the Nady 900 uses the same 797 3-micron diaphragm capsule as the MXL 2003, V93m and SP B1, B3 and TB1.

I remember when visiting Groove Tubes headquarters last year, they were showing me their current line of mics and a few new designs they were working on. when speaking with owner Aspen Pitman, who was the designer of their mics (as well as the co designer of the vipre) he was very involved and quite a passionate cat regarding his history and designs.

he spoke of early relations with Alesis Which were one of their first distributors (thus the Alesis stamp on some GT mics and I believe they stamped there brand on the vipre as well)..soon after GT found M-Audio to distribute there mics under the GT name..

I didn't ask at the time, but I vaguely remember that GT creates and designs there products in house and uses the overseas company to mass produce there blueprints? I'm not sure as its all so confusing these days!

Doesn't superlux make all the mics for nady, behringer, among others??

I have several CM88's, that I think work great, But....I bought a wireless guitar system from them once that didn't work Right out of the box! It's a crap shoot...be selective, review the specific item here on this forum, and you should be ok.

I don't...think so? I think all the superlux mics look like superlux mics. (Samson and Red5...those body styles just don't change...) I thought Nady is done by Soundking, and Behringer has used more than few for there OEM...

No clue who does GT...
