n00bie looking for serious help.

I'm just starting on the path of recording my own music and hopfully one day others as well. I have absolutly no idea what I'm doing or exactly where to start. I have what I belive to be an o.k. start on equipment. My question now is where do I start. This post is a bit premature due to the fact that I'm out of country and won't be able to hook up my studio till the end of March, however I want to get a head start on knowlegde so it will make things much easier. I currently have a Korg D-1600, enough mics to cover the state of Alaska, Event PS6 studio monitors, Alesis M-EQ 230 Equalizer, Alesis 3630 Compressor, and all the instruments I need for my use... I can't remember it all since I'm not there to see, but I think that's it....I am also going to be building a computer specifically for recording purposes also. Could you give any suggestions on programs/soundcards or equipment/recording tips you can pass along to a beginner??

If i stop my plans on seeing the family in Florida about 3k...otherwise about 1k, depending on how much the Florida thing costs...
 
i think your budget needs to be 1k.....you can always get more recording equipment but you only have one family......
 
I agree family definite first...

Another quick question also...I know I can't completely sound proof the room in my townhouse, however how can I supress the sound so it's not echoing?

I don't have one, but have been told by someone I trust that the Mia is a good soundcard, and not that expensive at around $200. Recording techniques: Since I don't know what type of music you're doing, it would be hard to give you tips; however, assuming you're going to be recording vocals, make sure that the bass guitar is either very low or not in the mix at all when recording a vocalist. Vocalists tend to sing flat when the bass is up in the mix.

I would pay a couple grand NOT to have to see my family, so I say buy the recording equip. and send them all a post card. :)
 
Good sound card

I don't have a ton of experience with sound cards, but I'm hardly a novice. Recently, I built a machine specifically to do music. In it, I chose the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card and I have never heard such beauty before from my computer. This card in a proper installation is deathly quiet through phones. In speakers, there is no residual noise at all. The MIDI is good, though I'm having a little trouble getting the drum sounds I want. That's probably my fault though. I'm looking into 3rd party sound sets for the MIDI. In Wave recording and editing, It's a killer.

I use Voyetra Digital Orchestrator Pro which for my purposes is wonderful. I use a bunch of other things also, GoldWave, Singulator, WaveClean and like them all. They are all very reasonably priced shareware programs that help me get a really clean sound when I use tape or old material.

On location, I use a TASCAM 414 which I also love. Hope this helps. Let me know how your recording comes along.

Properly chosen, quality gear will bring more lasting enjoyment than any snapshots of aunt martha in Pensacola.

Dont listen to Gidge. He is from Loosiana. They dont wear shoes and they'll fry and eat anything that moves. ;)
 
I agree with Tex.
I mean, the wheather in Alaska is great, why go to FL anyway?
You can always visit them when you're famous and made millions out of your music. Just tell them that you won't be coming this year but that you'll buy them a villa in Miami Beach the year after.
