N00b Question about SPIDF!

So, I want to get a small portable interface for my laptop.

I see the M-Audio Fast track has a spidf connection. I have a MOTU 896 with spidif connections as well. The thing is, my MOTU is connected to the desktop. My question is, if I want to expand the number of inputs on the m-audio, I simply plug in the spidif connectors and set it up respectively in my DAW correct? I don't have to have the MOTU plugged into my laptop, right?
 
I think it's different per interface.
Some will let you use them as standalone converters, others wont.

Cop out answer but the best thing to do is try it. You won't do any harm.
 
Remember, SPDIF is good for only 2 channels. Won't be able to get all 8 from teh Motu. I'm willing to bet you'll get better useage if you plug the M-Audio into the Motu for more channels... 10 vs 4.
 
Yeah, I just might do that.

The reason I had it the other way around is because I'm spending much of my time in college and decided it was finally time to get an interface for my laptop. So, my laptop has no firewire port and that's the protocol of the MOTU. I guess I didn't figure I could just transfer the files from my desktop to my laptop lol. Thanks guys!
