Hey everyone,

I posted my newest mix on myspace and thought that it took away from the original quality... I have also noticed that even proffesional recordings take a hit to shitty myspace quality. Is there anything that you can do to avoid this issue or is it pretty much set?

Thanks,
jd

Yes, you can do something - Don't use MySpace for hosting your audio files.

Other than that, you're at the mercy of their horrible sounding playback system.

myspace uses a codec optimized for streaming.. furthermore, it's taking an mp3, a compressed file, and compressing it again.. multiplying the shittiness factor. as such there is nothing you or anyone can do about it. if you want people to hear the full quality you recorded, then you should consider hosting it yourself somewhere you know it won't be re-encoded, and put it at a bitrate you're comfortable with, be it 192 or 320 or what have you..

Yes myspace makes songs sound like poopy. But if you go to a good bands page and listen to their songs they probably don't sound nearly as bad as yours which means it's really just exsposing your poor mixing abilities. It's not a bad thing though, happens to most of us home studio guys. So the better your mixes get the better they'll sound on myspace.

I've actually put a song on there that's in 192 and haven't really had a problem with it...

+1 for the good observation.

depending on when they are visited, the songs will play slower or faster, dont ask why.

get a sound click for sharing songs with people on forums such as these, i only use myspace so that people who have speakers to shitty to tell the difference browsing myspace pages.

I've noticed soundclick sounds even worse than myspace. Could just be me, but whenever a soundclick clip comes up I won't even listen to it.

thanks guys

It makes sense that a better mix will sound better on myspace and others but I was wondering whether bit rate and things of that nature would help with the "myspace murder effect". Right now I'm have a dither to 16 and I am bouncing 24 to 16, I know that 24 is the better. So would using 24 bit make a difference?

Thanks again for the responses,

james

the streaming is terrible i agree, but the sound quality of an actual download off myspace is considerably better, isnt it?

You could upload a song at 192, 256 or 320 BUT there's a size limit per track (I believe it to be around 4MB which translates roughly to a 4 minute track at 128) so if you have a track that's under 2 minutes, you probably could upload it at 256 and that would help your quality. All in all it's not myspace that sucks but the high compression of the mp3 standard that kills tracks...

my .02

Yeah, the downloads are much better quality, they just use the file you give them for that.

The limit is more than 4MB, I'm sure, I've submitted songs in 256 that are nearly 7 minutes long (that was the most you could do though, i had to edit my file to fit), so unless they changed it you should be fine.

Hosting your own page is cheaper these days. May be best to show your sounds.

I found a fairly good host that has capabilities for streaming both audio and video -- my caveat is that I've not tried them out yet so I don't know how reliable it is. http://startlogic.com/products_windowslogic.html

THis is for their Windows hosting package I believe that they have a unix based one that's less expensive. I'm pretty sure that they stream it into a popup Media player so the sound will be limited by the size of the pipe that it's coming thru.
