Opinion:
Very few people who today regularly use the phrase "off the hook" have ever actually used the kind of telephone that can physically be left off the hook.

Welll...I kind of do. I do have one hanging in my kitchen, but it's not actually a real phone, it's an AM/FM radio. The crank is the tuner dial!I bet SouthSide still has one of the phones with a crank and a party line.
