ok, here's the deal,

i took back my 'old' mixing desc from the second hand store,
if i can't sell it then i'll just use it for live recording...

now i'm testing the 24 channel studiomaster sessionmix
and when i plug an insert cable in the inserts (and connect it to a compressor) then my volume drops several Dbs

first i thought, maybe its my patchbay, cause its unbalanced,
but no, exactly the same thing happens when i just connect my
tc electronic stereo compressor to my mixers ...

the connection i make is:

Channel 1 insert --> stereo compressor channel 1
Channel 2 insert --> stereo compressor channel 2

and its not that my comp is fucked, same thing happens when i bypass the comp...

so is this normal, or are my inserts kinda damaged?
i'm using balanced yorkville cables...

thanks

Balanced inserts?
Maybe one is running -10 and the other +4?

Balanced cables through an unbalanced patchbay is not making things balanced. Maybe the output on the tc is low, can you set the output yourself?

War

Also - many inserts are UNBALANCED... if you are connecting to balanced outboard gear, you will see a 6dB drop in signal level coming back from the unit (even at the same gain structure) since you are unbalancing a balanced signal.

Not all inserts are unbalanced. If you have a seperate send and return jack on your console they are most likely balanced. Blue Bear is right though when reffering to a single TRS insert jack. rather than being a single balanced jack, it is a dual unbablanced jack that shares pin 1:)

hi friend, I am friendly sweetnubs. You are only mentioning that compressers are attached to your inserts. Are your compressors compressing and you are not using the make-up gain on your compressor?

nice,
the inserts on my studiomaster are just ONE 1/4" connector,
its well possible that they're unbalanced,
i did not notice the drop of 6db (and YEAH it is a drop of about 6db!!) on my other mixer...

i know about the patchbay, i'm replacing it in a few months,
but that thing doesn't cause the problem since i took the patch out of the signal path and same problem occurred,

and yes, i DID play witht he volume of the compressor, the make up gain and blabla, but thats not the problem,
from the moment anything goes trough the inserts...BLAM ...more silent,

but i don't care, my signal is loud enough.... i just didn't know, and i don't have a manual of my mixer...too bad...

thanks for the info ! now i'll be able to sleep again at night,

cheers,
