My tube head reducing gain?..

Hiall!

I find this weird.

It's a part of my tone struggles with a Sovtek mig-30 head.

I found that my Koch pedaltone works well as a tube preamp/overdrive before my head.
It sounds good, separates well in the mix and I like the feel, no excessive noise or feedback, got the separation from higher strings I was after that a distortionpedal was lacking.:)

But... DI:d, or through the tube head at low volumes, the pedaltone has plenty of gain, even for metal.
But as I turn the head up, somewhere halfway, as it starts to crank, the gain DIMINISHES back to a rockish overdrive!

Why is this?

I like the sound good enough, but a tad more gain wouldn't hurt..
At the moment it is so "clear" that all my glitches remain unmasked!:D

It's probably the power section "loading up," getting fuller in the mids, and knocking down the sizzling highs from the pedal and pre-amp section. A tube power amp will definitely sound woodier turned up, there's no use in trying to set up a sound at converstional volume and then cranking up, it won't work.
