On Facebook tonight I saw a still image from a touring play - featuring my A77. The one I delivered to the theatre and nobody knew what it was. It seems the show is actually touring, so my Revox is on tour too!

Nice. I found this from year 2012 :

Zero! Makes me feel old, but the Director is one of my ex-college students.

Very quiet - the spools will turn and qlab will make the noise!

I absolutely LOVE that take up reel. Damned if I can find one anywhere for 1/2" tape.

I have a spool of ½” tape bought by mistake. Give me a day or two to check what it on, and if its that sort, you can have it.

That's very generous. I will gladly buy the roll of tape regardless of the reel. Thanks very much.

It's not the style on the right but a bit more holey than the left one. I'll take a picture tomorrow for you.

The one on the left looks a lot like my stock take up on my Akai reel to reel.

The "tape" reel. as opposed to the "take up reel" depends on the manufacturer of the tape. Ampex, Maxell, etc, are all somewhat different. My Ampex 499 tape reel looks very much like the one in the picture. I have several spare take up reels that look exactly the same.
IMHO, more metal is better because of the "flywheel" effect. On the other hand, the more open space tends to be more forgiving in a "working" environment (less prone to bending). A take up reel can be rendered inoperable if it gets banged up, such that the space between the front and rear are not parallel. If it's bent badly enough, it will wobble, and may cause your tape to grab and/or hang up (worst case).
To say nothing about what it does to the bearings on the motors!

I think most of my tape reels, are metal as well. But for sure the stock take up was metal and not as much "space" to your point. Never really thought much about it but your explanation makes sense as to the "whys"of the manufacturer of the reel-reel having a beefer reel. .

If for some reason your Revox gets broken (or lost/stolen), you can rest assured that you can get a new one.

I'm surprised that nobody has made a note of this elsewhere in the Analog Tape section.

Sixteen grand? Wow. But it does look nice. In fairness, they have been amiss not doing this when reel to reels became collectors items.

I'll wait for the The Revox B77 plugin to be on sale for $29.95.
