I started clearing my basement and building a home studio at the end of the year, and were progressing - slowly, but we're getting there.

Here are a few before and "during" shots...

That's the stairwell coming down into a new foyer we are building which will have an entry-way into the studio, mainly to help isolate sound that will travel through that window.

This is the rear wall on the left side, just different view in the second shot; we boxed in the water meter and will build an access panel. This takes up room but it will look a lot better not having that meter and pipe in the middle of the room.

This is the wall you see standing at the bottom of the stairs. The back room is what will be the control room, and we just finished yesterday framing in that wall and window opening. The main room is roughly 25x13 and I like the way it's coming out so far.

I'm not sure if I'm going to build a double wall for the control room side... my Dad has been helping me build this thing aka he's doing most of the work (as usual, control freak) so he doesn't really get it that things have to be different than a regular room, and since he elected to pay for the materials (a very nice Christmas present to my wife and I) I don't really want to contest anything so I'm trying to go with what it is and make the best of it. Would i still want to angle the glass slightly towards the live room? Would it be better to build another wall frame behind that for more space between the window and/or better isolation options? If I do that I start to lose space in the already-cramped control room. We are sheet-rocking the entire thing, including the ceiling. I haven't decided on the type of insulation I will use yet but I'd want something fairly good at reducing the bleedthrough into the living room above. Again, it's not really that critical; it's my house and I don't have any kids so I'm really not worried about sound travelling upward, although if my wife is upstairs and I feel the need to go play some stuff I also don't want it to sound like it's right next to her... I'm sure anything will be better than it was, which was loose acoustic tiles and no insulation at all...

My other big thing is I have no idea what to do about the flooring... I would love for it to be laminate or some pergo-type floor, mainly because it would look nice. But the current floor is very uneven , and I can't be ripping up those tiles as they contain asbestos. So whatever I do i have to go over it. I guess I could use some self-leveling compound but that would really get expensive. Carpet would be fine, really.. what do you think? The typical assortment of instruments would be in the live room; keyboards, piano, guitars/amps, drums...

You guys are so damn lucky in North America, having basements. Good luck with it!

Thanks - I'm going to update this thread as I make more progress. Should turn out to look pretty good.
