Hello,

Well here's another one....This one is special to me as it's just me and my puter. That's question one.....Is it too thin as is or would some backing track/tracks help?

Also I'm not to happy with the drums as usual but at least I'm making progress with my use of PC Drummer, a really excellent program for a songwriter/recordist.

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/blues/royl/#

It's a ballad called "Solid Ground"

Thanks for your time......I have been lax in visiting other's offerings, a very busy summmer, but after this one of mine I intend to do some listening in return.

Muchas Gracias,

Rusty K

Rusty, oh no!! The link doesnt work for some reason, so I went to www.nowhereradio.com and found your song. I tried to do lo-fi, and it wont work either, so I tried to download it, it wouldnt let me either!! When I tried it says members only. I am a member, made sure I was logged in, ditto. I dont know wassup, but perhaps you can go back and make the download available for non-members too, perhaps that might work.

Where's Waldo?

David,

I have done all that. I think the server is having some problems today. I had a broken link, my mistake, on my first post, the one you visited so I reposted with the correct link. The link now works but streaming says closed when it begins to load.

Sorry about that....hope you will try again.
Thanks,

Rusty K

Rusty, DavidK never quits! I tried the download again, didnt work, than all of a sudden it did.

Great stuff. I was amazed at the sound quality, particularly from an mp3. It was so clear and crisp, sounded really great. I assume you didnt use windows recorder!! Very pro, what was your equipment? I am guessing pro studio.

BTW, streaming still says closed. Great job

Thanks David,

I recorded 24 bit LynxOne/N-Track multitrack and mastered with T-Racks. Guitar recorded with a Marshall 2001 MXL condenser/Bluetube. Vocals were my first recording with my Sennheiser E855/bluetube/limiting. I'll have to go take a listen. How did you listen to streaming if it says closed? Or did you download?

Thanks so much for your time.

Rusty K

Rusty, I downloaded it, took 22 minutes, well worth it. I am listening to Mp3s more and more, and lo-fi just doesnt cut it, you have a beautiful sound, very impressive. If you have time, please download one of mine. http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/classical/davidk/

try the one called Prokofiev 2, Pretty interesting stuff. Dave

DavidK,

Thanks again for your time and comments. I did visit your link and listened to all four selections. I do appreciate classical music though I certainly am not that well trained/educated musically. Sounded like your recordings were live. They could use some noise reduction, I think without disrupting the performance, to eleminate some of the background noise.

I was intrigued by the picture of your instrument, I presume. Is it an electric violin? Unique. Is it a custom made instrument?

This is the link I used:

The tune downloaded but would not stream play.

Nice little tune. Good vocals (sounds a little like Willie Nelson crossed with Pual Williams). I love the long crying harp in the background. The harp reminds me of some live Neil Youngs performances.

The only thing I would do differently is move the guitar a little to the left. For me, it sound a little out of place way over on the right.

Rusty K,

Great Volume. It matches the pro stuff I was listening right before this..

You know, this is a very good job for a homerecordist.

I can hear 2 problems with the vocal. One is that it sounds a bit cold. Not really a problem except that I've been listening to fuel "bad day" right before your stuff. I cant really put my finger on the other one. I think it might be the reverb. I dont have any headphones(headphones would show the reverb problem immediately.

I like the tapish sound on the vocals.

Ok, this is a good mix. It sounds a bit incoherent, as if stuff is not playing in the same room. This is just a nit pick. I think you should experiment with maybe a different size of main reverb room, or try using a bit more. It might help or might not.

I like your singing.

peace

CayanJaguar,

Thanks for listening.....yes this reverb thing is perplexing. I have used a verb wash is the past over the whole mix to do just what you are talking about, put everything in the same room, but the last time I posted such a mix I got a lot of contrary feelings about it.

I'm gong to have to work on what you pointed out....I did notice it myself but I just don't have another solution yet except for the "verb wash" thing.

On the "cold vocals"....do you have a suggestion? My pre is a bluetube. There are much better preamps off course but....?
Increasing the overdrive but I believe that brings "dirt" in as well.
This song needs that breathy close intimate vocal touch. I'm afraid that's not my style but I should be able to approach it with my mixing and processing (if I knew how..ha).

Thanks again,

Rusty K

jgourd,

I didn't get notice of your post so I missed it at first.

Yeah something is not working right for me at Nowhere. I'm emailing Waldo back and forth trying to get it resolved. I can't listen to anyone's hifi....just lo. Waldo seems to think it might be a browser problem but I'm still checking.

Appreciate you taking the time to download it and listen.

I'll revisit the mix concerning the guitar too far off to the side. Actually it relates to one of the main questions I had about the tune and that is.....Does it need anything else in the way of instrumentation? If the answer is no then the guitar placement in the mix becomes more critical right now. Perhaps a more stereo sounding guitar?

Rusty, thanks for checking out my stuff too. The sound quality sucks, it was made with a walmart tape deck off the radio, so I dont think anything is gonna help. Someday soon I will post some stuff I am doing with Cakewalk and synths.

My fiddle in the picture? It was made for me by my buddy Mark Wood. Mark and I play in a band called the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. He is one of a kind, check out www.woodviolins.com

hello again,

I'm glad I got to this before it expired from the first page in mp3 clinic.

I want to apologize to those who took the time to listen to this tune. It was not finished. I've listened to what you have had to say and in the process I realized that my drum tracks were incorrect. Not being a drummer it takes me a few tries to get it right. I thought I had it but I did not. Though the kick linked well with the bass line the overall feel was disjointed and choppy.

I've reprogrammed the drum tracks and it sounds a lot smoother. This should make a big difference on the new mix as well. Nothing ever seems to work just right unless the basic (drum) tracks are locked.

I've found it's usually best for me to at least sleep on anything I think I have finished.....rest my ears and come back for a new listen. I did that with this tune but obviously I should have taken more time.

I think from now on I will just direct folks to my storage space and let them listen to anything that I have uploaded.

Thanks again,

Rusty K
