So, i have one of the original Tascam 488 (not the second version). I started producing/recording a new Heavy Metal band. They wanted to record a great sounding cd without spending a lot. Going into a studio, they would have to pay studio time as well as my price. So, i offered them my recording services with my old tascam 488 at their rehersal place.

WOW, i forgot how good the 488 sounds. I always keep the heads on the 488 clean and use the best tapes to record on. I love the sounds i got. I havent recorded on tape in years, just sticking to ProTools HD, and i must say i forgot that good warm tape sound. Its all about recording technique. Yeah it sucks i dont have unlimited tracks to record on. But if you use thoughs engineering skills and good mic techniques you can get great sounding recordings.

This band really fits well with the 488. The only thing i would want is an extra track for the drums, but 3 tracks on the drums will work.

Im glad i got it out for this project! But back to ProTools for the next band.

4 track?

I still use my tascam 424.I forego the digital $$$ and head straight for the quad cables or power conditioners.A clean signal will pretty much override the tape's shortcomings.
