My New Toys, It's Analog Paradise

I bought a few items yesterday and wanted to see what all my analog friends thought about my purchase. 1st I got an Otari 5050 B2 on a roll around cart with manual included. Next, a few different alignment tapes, finaly, I bought 5 MCI JH110B machines all on roll carts. 3 are two track and two are 2 are 4 track. Also with complete manuals. I guess they weigh about 250 to 300 LBS each. I think by the time we moved the last two they might have weighed 6 or 7 hundred tho. My plan is to fix the best two or three for my recording studio and sell the rest to buy more gear. He still has about 15 decks like an Otari 4 track 1/4" I think. 1 Ampex full track mono 1/2" (maybe, or it might be 1/4" And finaly he has 1 Otari 1/4" don't know the model but it looks like a new version of the MCI. So all together I got 6 complete manuals, 5 test tapes, a few reels. and 6 decks. I tested the Otari and seems to work fine. It needs a few buttons and some new rubber tho. With all this stuff I paid $230.00 What do you guys think? I know it will depend on the condition of everything, but I think I did OK. I will be posting MANY pics and questions begging for help when I get stuck.

Just wondering how you're gonna use everything. It's all on it's side :) Just jokin'. Any chance you wanna give it away to a poor, underprivalaged musician with no money :P
 
You are in sweetbeats league on the deals, maybe even bumped him out for the gold medal :)
 
That is just sick, man.:D Just when I thought I had a steal on my 38 and mixer... Seriously though, very nice score!
 
Now, I like upright machines, but the arcade style Otari machines just totally trip my trigger. Excellent score.
 
I guess I should feel very lucky that I got 600 bucks for 38! :laughings:

Long time lurker, first time poster. I just couldn't sit quietly anymore. That is the deal of a lifetime! I wish I still lived in Ohio, I might have looked that guy up...

Thanks for the feedback guys. The Otari needs a few basic things plus a play and record button. I called Otari and they are checking on parts availability. I'm so happy to have the manuals to help me along. I'll post more pics as I get to it. I'll make sure they are right side up.

Got a call from Otari with prices for my deck. As it stands now about $100.00 in parts should get it back into shape. Here are a few pics of the heads. I CAN NOT take a good pic to save my life but looking at then I can see what looks like scratches on them.

I'm seeing lots of conical, uneven wear patterns on the guides and heads which means there is a re-lapping job in your future that will completely eclipse the bargain purchase price on all that gear unless you learn how to re-lap them yourself?

I'd try to pick the deck with the least amount of head wear and mate that up with the best electronics and put together one good 4 and 2 track and part out the rest of it on flea-bay to more then cover your costs. ;)

I was afraid of that. I've been in contact with one of the guys here and depending on the severity of the condition he might be willing to relap them for me. As far as the guides, I have read they can be re sleeved. If that's the case I can do that and perhaps keep the cost where I am comfortable with. I might have taken on more then I can handle.
