I want to say thanks to all the cats who swayed me toward this piece.

Before I was using an M-Audio Delta 1010. There is night and day comparison. Playback is much more clear and crisp as well as tracking quality. I can hear differences in different preamps much better now. One of the most killer features of this beast is the headphones monitoring. You can route anything to the monitor with ease and control the monitoring levels seperate from your tracking in stereo, so you don't have to worry about your preamp having two outputs( one for monitoring and one for tracking). Just think if you had three of these things.

I used the 1010 for years and it has been a good steping stone as far as learning.

I know where I stand now with ad/da converters.

Almost scary, innit? I got the same sensation playing back tracks recorded on my loved/hated Roland 880EX in Sonar through the RME. Blew me away.

You can use any pair of unoccupied output channels to feed a headphone mixer, or any one channel if you don't need stereo, so you could run a pair of monitors, a pair of mains, and four separate stereo phone mixes (if you use the digital outs too). Pretty awesome.

If you have trouble with routing the mixer software, PM me, it's simple if you grasp it, and impossible if you look past what the manual says.

Not that it matters but you could have done direct monitoring with the Delta 1010 in the same way you're doing it with the Multiface.

Granted, it's not near as customizable.

Anyway, welcome to the RME family! I'm a proud RME Fireface 800 user myself.

Hey there. I am just researching interfaces and came across the Fireface. It looks like you all have good things to say about it, but is anybody having any problems? I have a dual ADAT setup right now and I'm looking to switch over to a computer-based system. With the Fireface's ADAT lightpipe in, I should be able to dump all my tapes onto a hard drive and even use the ADAT for 8 extra ins and outs, albeit at a much lower bit/sample rate. I'm thinking about getting 2 Fireface 400s so I can have 16 ins and outs and mix on my analog desk, does that make sense?

Just looking for some info from you RME users out there. Thanks a ton.

Bought the Fireface 800 about 4 months ago... I'm still learning its capabilities ...

before i was recording straight through my Realtek ac97 built in soundcard via the line in .... i cringe when i hear anything i recorded using that ...sounds so dirty / muffled ....the RME is ULTRA clean! ... I'm over the moon with my decision to buy the Fireface...

One concern that does enter my head though is that although it is really clean! and i mean really clean!! ..... it can be a bit over critical/ cold .... what i mean is ... unless you have a great guitarist playing a great guitar through a great amp into a great mic you are gonna hear every single little flaw and it will be really emphasised.... to some that may be a good thing ...but a great guitarist/ singer / bassist isn't always the card you are handed.....most of the time i am handed a bass player who can't play in time, a drummer who doesn't know how to tune his drums etc etc

i remember reading one review about how RME is overly critical in comparison with other mic pres, mixing desks and out board gear which gave a more warmer analog kinda sound ....

I would love to know how to use the RME in conjuction with rack gear such as a nice compressor / limiter to give me a more analog warmth that i crave from those early zep records

anyways ... i am still learning how to get the best use of my Fireface everyday, and am really glad i bought it ... :)
