Here is a drawing of my new mastering room I am constructing. I know that this board is mostly studios but I wanted to post it and see if anyone had any suggestions or ideas. All of the sheetrock is up and we are finishing painting. We will probably start with treatments next week. I just got The Master Handbook of Acoustics. That should help me out but any help from the acoustic experts on this board would be appreciated.

Thanks
Scott

Hi Scott - As you probably know, Mastering rooms can be tricky beasts. Do you really mean a mastering room or just a mixing room? Will you be taking mixes done elsewhere and mastering them in this room? Eitherway, You should consider getting rid of parallel walls where possible. This should be symetric about the center of the room. You will probably want to add some slot type bass traps either along the side walls or along the back wall or both. Some sort of diffusion on the back wall is probably needed as well. Along with the book you mentioned, check out John Syers information on acoustics and constuction at:

I have attached a hacked up copy of your drawing with some of the ideas I mention above.

Cheers
Kevin.

Thanks Kevin. It is an actual mastering room (not mixing). Im not going to be able to splay the walls because I don't want the room to be permanent and also I don't have that much room. Do you think I could get away with angling my treatments on the walls and ceiling instead? I have thought about a Hemoltz resonator on the ceiling that that is deeper in the front and shallower in the back. Also the bass traps in the back or going to have to be built horizontally between the ceiling and back wall because of the space between the back wall and interior door. I might be able to put some mid-band absorbers in the back corners with an angle of about 12 degrees and make the upper trap for lower frequencies. I plan on putting 703 on the walls where the reflections will be but I am open to suggestions.

Thanks
Scott

Scott - sounds like your on the right track. Angling the side wall treatments is a reasonable thing to do. Let us know how it turns out.

Cheers
Kevin.
