My new amp sucks.

Traitorous Usurper
I hate buying amps.

My local "Music-Go-Round" recently obtained a Roland JC-120 combo and put it out on the floor for 400 bucks. Not bad, eh? After piling up all of the useless rack gear I've got lying around, I went in for a trade.

Wow. This amp really blew. I have absolutely no doubt that a decent version of this amp is what I'm looking for (based on several recommendations from you good people), but it sucks to think that maybe I found a good deal on my dream amp only to notice that it has: 1. a bashed in speaker, 2.) a lovely hissing sound, and 3.) the most distorted clean tone that I've ever heard, even at a relatively low volume.

I wish I was the kind of person that possessed any amount of patience. I wanted new gear and I wanted it right then. So I ended up buying a fucking Peavey Special 212. Hey, I gotta admit that it had a pretty decent clean tone, the wattage was nice and high, it had an external speaker jack, etc.

I took it home and discovered: 1.) a lovely hissing sound, 2.) a completely non-functional footswitch, and 3.) the reverb knob should have been labeled "hellish agonizing buzz."

It's going back to the store this weekend. Why do I always have to learn my lessons the hard way?? Hopefully they'll have something else to try out.

I borrowed one of those amps for the past few months before I bought my pignose, and while it did suck, the footswitch did work

My 2 favorite budget amps are :

Gibson Goldtone GA-10 or 12
Peavey Classic 30

Around $500 new and $300 used on ebay. They are both great in the studio or on stage

I just got a Line 6 Spider II 15 $159 GC. You can hear it here.

The solo on Psycho Surfer uses the crunch channel. The solo on nice b n young uses the insane channel. Untitled is using both clean and crunch for the guitar parts.

I like it so far. It's versatile and easy to use.

Hey apl, I was thinking about Line 6. The price is definitely right on those things, so I'll be taking a look. I just haven't decided if I want a combo or just a head.

Too bad about that JC-120, though. They're great for clean guitar.

Yeah, I was bummed as hell. Hopefully I'll find a better one around at some point.
