ok, i'm getting a little suspicious here...
i owe this motu 828 since a few months, i'm happy with it,

recently i upgraded my PC to make it alot more silent,
got me a new case, new psu, and now i'm gonna change the cooling on the cpu.... its already silent enough to hear my harddisc think

problem is,,,,i knew that my Motu does humm a little,
but now it just drags my attention more and more since my room is pretty silent...

do other users expierience the same thing?

i might be wrong, but seems like the humming is getting a bit louder...

ehm...gonna say something painful now,
i bought the unit in the USA,,,, i live in europe,

i changed the powercord and maybe there was a switch to switch it to 220Volts

i'm not fucking up my soundcard , am i?

i got several US things in my rack that work perfect, some of them have a 110-220V switch, others are hooked to a step-down converter

the only thing i'm worried about is this motu...since its the only thing in my room that makes some noize!

ehm... HELP ?

..edit,,,the manual says
"line voltage: 100-120 volts (US AND JAPAN)
220+250 volts (EUROPE)
frequency: 47-63 HZ

so this should be fine...

Not a peep out of my mkII.
There is a little red switch on the right side to change what input voltage you use (828mkII anyway ...not sure about the original 828).

Is the unit grounded?

Try running a wire from the case to the earth pin of the plug

mhh, might be a grounding problem,,,,

i'll see if i can do something about that....

hey earworm

nah - i have a 2408mk2 that's been humming and fizzing for about a year! my 24i/o is silent as the grave, but it sounds like a nuclear power station nearing meltdown when the 2408 kicks in.

was chatting to another studio buddy of mine yesterday and his 828 does the same.

i contacted motu about this and they suggested much of the above, including waggling the voltage selector a few times when unplugged, and even (i sensed straws being clutched!) 'going to another house and seeing if it did the same thing'!!! now, i love MOTU but even i thought this was a bit far-fetched!

they have recommended swapping out the power supply, it's about $50 and will solve the prob - your local MOTU dealer/repair shop should be able to do this for you. of course, if it's still in warranty...

this has never affected my audio either though i always worry it will until it's fixed. i also worry about tripping out an A/D converter, but MOTU seemed to reckon there should be little chance. i'm swapping the psu out anyhow.

hope you get it sorted.
