ok..i am 15 years old so building my own studio has been a huge difficulty for me because i cant just "build" a studio...so i had to settle for a shed that we have outside...at the beggining this place had plywood as floor and had no insulation whatsoever...plus it was full of crap..since i "moved" into the shed....i made a second floor so i could put all that up there..on the pics you cant really tell that there is a second floor..but beleive me there is....i also had to get a job and work my butt off....this is about 1 years worth of stuff that i have bought...and dont say that i am spoiled because i have worked for every bit of this equipment....

the shed is 12x8 so it is a pretty small place...plus i devided it into two rooms...but yeah...the division is just a couple of plywood boards and some blankets on them...its "supposed" to be a live room and a control room...hehe..
i am on a low budget so dont make fun of me...hehe..

Hi, ELICANTU:

that´s the ideal thread to share the pics:
http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=70931

Congrats for the studio.
I know you´re not taking advices, but I was listening your recordings on my space. Good songs, but with some noises (due to street, wood walls, gear, don´t know...). If is not possible to "tame" it, a dinamic mic could be a solution to improve your recordings,at least for while.

Ciro

thanks..i'll defenetly try to get one of those dynamic mic..its just that the shed is prectically beside the road...i am about 50 yard away from the road..

Looking good. This reminds me of me sooooooooo much. I'm 19, and have a 14x8 shed. Only thing I've got which you don't, is a world war air-raid shelter too. I've split my shed in 2 aswell. On other thing is, I've built another shed around it for isolation, and I'll be plasterboarding mine. Maybe if you plasterboard, you'll improve the isolation. I'll have a listen to your tracks.

Good job anyway, you're way ahead of me.

dang thats pretty sweet could you possibly put some pics up of your studio because i dont really get the whole builiding a shed around the other one..

if you could put some pics up it would be awsome

Ok. Here you go

For a low-budget room treatment, go to Home Depot and buy some insulation to stuff in those walls. They sell batts that are already cut to fit inside stud bays, 8' length, so it should take about 10 minutes to install.

....

Get R-13 insulation, it's cheap and will work okay, also look into bass traps, we have alot of diys on the site.

Nice job dude, for 15, that is a pretty cool job and setup.

Moreso, it shouws you have really put some work into something, and that means something.

Stick with it. You are right now about 5 years or more ahead of most people who get into this stuff. If you can manage to keepo focus on music/recording you could really do somehting with it. Most people who do big things get there by stubborness and discipline, even more than talent.

yeah thanks for all of the possitive feedback!
and i have spent about 3 hours everyday reading all this stuff and i did come across the basstraps...but can you explain to me what they actually do?

im guessing its got to do with something about the bass dynamics of the room
(im stupid)

and i will defenetly try to get some of that insulation

Basically, when you are mixing, and listening to your recorded tracks, you will be making decisions about what sounds good and what doesn't.
Physics has a tendancy to mess with you here. Sounds travels in waves, which have peaks and valleys, when they line up next to each other in the same path, they either reinforce or cancell each other out. Either way, you end up with signals that have certian frequencies either boosted or reduced, BY THE ROOM. In other words, same recording played back in a different space will sound different, it might have more bass or other frequencies.

So when you are monitoring (mixing) or tracking, you want to avoid these areas where the waves line up, one way is to avoid having parallel walls, where as the sound bounces around it will tend to "stack up" and then you get that interference. That is why you see angled and curved walls in the rooms of a lot of pro studios.

As for absorbtion, especially bass absorbtion, you have some extra challenges. Bass frequencies have long wavelengths and they tend to be really hard to avoid getting to stack up. So you may be tracking or montoring and have really heavy or reduced bass.

So the rigid fiberglass like owens corning 703 or the like is one of the few ways to get real bass absorbtion at a reasonable (DIY) expense.

A basic rule of thumb, is that in a smaller space, you will probabaly get more benefit from trying to make your room as "dead" as possible. When it comes to bass frequencies, the deader, the better.

Insulation in the stud bays of that shed will help a bit. floor to ceiling bass frequency absorbers will help as well.

Monitor placement

You should place your monitors vertically, so the waves from the woofer and tweeter reach your ears closer to the same time.

yeah, also on the montor position, it looks like they are a bit higher up thatn they should be, and it looked like you had another 6 inches or so that you could lower the shelves for the monitors. In an ideal situation, you want the monitors to be sitting vertically with the top of the woofer or bottom of the tweeter at ear level when in the listening position. I think if you drop them down about 6 inches you'll be closer to that.

I think it's great. I think your parents ought to move out into the shed, and let you have a bigger room in the house, from the demonstration of effort you have put into it.... not to mention better climate control for your instruments, etc.

great job

I am 42 and an established pro musician, you have a better setup than I do. :( Dont YOU make fun of ME. :D

OK, I beat you in the keyboard and violin dept ;) , but your setup is pretty cool. I like the shed, you got privacy out there. Keep up the good work, nice to see a young un with so much interest in recording.

hey thanks for all the possitive comments!
could you possibly post some pics of your studio up..you got me a bit curious because i listened to your music and its pretty amazing...
and also could you tell me what kind of keyboard you have....it sounds pretty good too..
