The Pie Guy
as you all know....
I spare no expense when it comes to audio equipment.....

I saw a brand new microphone for sale and just could not resist the urge to purchase.....a serious case of G.A.S.

a Shure Prologue............with an xlr cable.....
all for $.99 at Goodwill........
I figure the cable is worth the buck anyways......ya know? ;) :D

so I guess that answers the eternal question............

what is the best Microphone for under $1.00  :p

That reminds me

I have a Shure Prologue.

Shit!

Now I'm gonna have to dig it out and add it to my mic inventory.

The best thing I can say about a Shure Prologue is it has an on/off switch. And I hate mics with on/off switches.

Why is that? Because some singers will turn the mic off when done. They just know the show is over after they finish singing. Then the next person to use the mic doesn't get any gain. The sound person cranks it up trying to hear. Then the singer realises the mic is off and turns it on. Squeeal!

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

Here's my latest acquisition. It was so George Jetson I couldn't resist. Apparently it's a Cadenza ribbon microphone from the 60s. According to Google, it has a 2" ribbon. I'm dying to hear how it sounds. And it's aqua too! :D

Let's say late 50's. I remember a friend of mine buying one new then to use with his Ferrograph. They are British and were made by the Simon company who made a tape recorder, and not many years before that, a disc recorder for home use. They competed with Reslo and Film Industries who also made modestly priced ribbons. It is likely to have an output impedance of 50k-ohm, intended for high-impedance tube inputs, so will not work well with today's inputs, or with long cables. (The plastic clip in the photo has no relevance to the Cadenza.)

Very stylish! :)

I eBayed, and I want one, but don't have that much money to spare.

I tried the prolouge last night.....

sounds better than my OM 48..... :D

Thanks! I dug this up on Google:

1958 HiFi Yearbook has it listed:
Response 50 - 12000 c/s. Sensitivity , high impedence -58db, low
impedence -93db, or with suitable line transformer -58db. Source imp. 30
ohms & 80Kohms. Price UKP 8. 18s. 6d; with tripod desk stand and 11 fft.
cable UKP 10.10s.0d

I'll set it up next to my AEA and Beyers and see how it does.

1958 would be spot on from my memories. I was just about to look up the HiFi yearbooks but you have beaten me to it. For many people, those prices would have been a week's wages back then!

The dual-impedance aspect is interesting as that is also what Reslo did. I had some of these and had both high impedance (coax) cables and low impedance (twin-screened) cables for them. You could make up a new balanced twin-screened cable for yours, but you would have to rob or rewire the connector/stand to do it. My guess is that the present cable will be using two of the contacts, and the remaining two will be the low-z.

:( CAUTION! :( Do not attempt to measure across the terminals with a DC multimeter. This will magnetize the transformer core and destroy its properties. Same advice applies to any high quality low level transformers in mics or mic preamp input transformers (and, for example, moving coil pickup transformers).

Thanks a lot for the info and the caution! You probably just saved the trannny there. I'll have to post after I get it and try it out.
