I got laid off in August 2008. Finally got a new job two weeks ago. During the layoff, I built a modest home studio.
SONAR 8 Producer Edition (with a variety of add-ins)
HP Laptop (with enough memory to get by)
M-Audio studio monitors
Novation MIDI Keyboard/Synth
Sterling Audio ST59 Condenser Mic
MXL V69ME Tube Condenser Mic
Audix i5 Mics (2)
Alesis Firewire MultiMix 8 Mixer
Presonus Firestudio Project Interface
I'm working on a basic 6 track instrumental thing with bass, drums, 12 string acoustic (rhythm) guitar, Fender Strat (lead) guitar, 6 string (lead overdub) acoustic guitar, and keyboard. It's a jazzed up U2 inspired tune in F#min, with a break in Amaj. Recording some direct into desk - real time, and using a mic'd stereo track for the lead guitars (2 mics from the amp). It's all very new to me, so it will be pretty rough around the edges. My instruments: Fender American Deluxe Strat HSS, LP Supreme, LP Junior (John Lennon), Gretsch 6119 Tennessee Rose.
