As Scott points out, in order to know how to give you any tips, we have to know what you're going to use it for. Was it a good deal? Sure. That's about what they go for on ebay. Akg's dynamic mics are underated.. Like all mics, they work for somebody. I use D690 and D770 quite a bit, as well as a vintage D320B. The Shure SM57/SM58 has kind of been everybody's cheap go-to dynamic for years, and some perfectly dood mics by AKG got less press, although they were very popular in Europe, including some big name bands. Lately, Sennheiser has been making inroads in that $80-$100 stage mic bracket.
Honestly, I prefer D770 to D880 for most stuff, like many people prefer SM57 to SM58 for vocals, even though it is advertised as an instrument mic. D770 is the instrument biased version of your buddy's D880. I think you'll find that the cheaper AKG dynamics will get very little respect, and everyone will tell you to just buy a Shure. It is, however, a perfectly good stage mic, and is OK on snare for recording, and live sax. It's also very feedback resistant and rugged.-Richie
