....a good choice for a do-it-all solution, including PC audio interface?
hey all.
There is a Mackie Onyx 1220 (not the i-version) for sale on craigslist locally for $350. (the firewire card 'does not work' tho). I'm very tempted to buy it, BUT I have no idea if it is suitable for my needs. HELP! advice plz?
Scenario: I'm building my first studio, and for the foreseeable future my studio will include no more than 6 mics: 2 x AT4050s and 4 x Sankan Cos-11Ds lavalier mics (although initially only 3 mics in total). The studio is for video group discussions. I have no pre amps or audio interfaces or compressors or anything... yet.
Considering how I am dropping a couple grand into just the microphones, I don't want to cheap out on the preamps and audio interfaces, but I have also already gone way over budget.... and can't really afford to drop another grand.
I'm not really sure what my best option is at this point, but one option that seems viable after reading this forum inside and out is to buy a couple used DMP3 dual-channel preamps and also buy a used Delta 1010lt PCI card. (~$350 total) That would give me 4-channel recording to my computer, which probably would be enough for me for now, but it doesn't offer me much flexibility I feel if I want to do field work or broadcast live.
Would buying an old used Mackie Onyx 1220 (non-i version) for <$350, without a firewire card, make sense for me instead? ie: are its pre-amps / ADC / mixer /etc, a good match for the mics I listed? Can I use my own firewire card with it since it doesnt have one? I heard a lot of good things about Mackie Onyx, but I don't know what those thigns are.. lol. and ya, audio quality is important to me.
Thanks for all the help, everyone! this forum rocks!
