My First MR-8 song!

Okay I think I have this figured out so far. I posted it on my cheesy personal website.

For this recording I used just the Boss Dr-5 recorded stereo on trks 5&6 along with my bass just plugged in direct into the MR-8 track 3, just wanted to see how this thing will sound barebones. I mixed and mastered all the tracks to 7 and 8 and exported them as mono tracks (if you saw my post below I could not successfully import a stereo track).

I then Used freeware Crystal Audio Engine to mix tracks 7 and 8 back into a stereo wav file in which I then used Musicmatch Jukebox to convert to MP#. I am glad I did not get the Tascam pocket studio 5 since I do not like how MP3's sound.

Very good bass work clif! Where were you when they made the movie "shaft"?...Sounds like a great soundtrack to me! How many tracks did you use? Also, I've been having trouble getting my levels up...what external devices did you use if any?

"Shaft! I'm one bad motha -watch your mouth!":) I used just 3 tracks, (5 and 6 for stereo drum machine and one mono track for bass guitar). I did not use any external devices, the bass was direct into the MR8. when I bounced all the tracks to 7 and 8 I used the "powerful" mastering button. I think I also boosted the levels a little with the Crystal AUdio Engine when combining imported tracks 7 and 8 into a stereo wave file.

Before recording your tracks, make sure that the levels on the MR8 peak around the "12 bar reading" on the display screen that seems to be a good level so far.

Nice, sounds like Tony Levin playing Stick. That a single take, or did you do any slicing and dicing?


(I think this will replace Pachelbel's Canon in D as my headphone track of choice when my co-worker is yelling at someone on the phone...)

Thanks man, oh yeah I did a lot of slicing and dicing especially when I don't plan on what I am gonna play, it just try to do one phrase at a time:)

You said this is just 3 tracks: I take it that they are stereo drums and then the bass. Where does the synthesizer come in?

By the way, did you try loop mode auto punch in/out. I have not been able to get it to work like they describe. This is to allow repeated recording over Point A to Point B without having to keep pushing Record/Play together.

I posted something I did on the MR-8 too, but it isn't anything great.

Thanks. Actually my drum machine is a Boss Dr-5 (Dr. Rythym Section) which includes a 4 track sequencer, nothing real special but real easy for me to use.

As far as looping I got carried away. I have not tried that exact feature yet I just got god at setting up A-B rehearsals. I will try to work the looop feature next. It is just that when I make a mistake, I am in a hurry to undo and reset back to locate A. I don't want to wait until the loop finishes and then returns on its own. That would make for an even longer recording session.

Yeah I am still using the 128MB(I depleted my Christmas funds, I am lucky to have been able to even buy the USB cable.

I am becoming a master of bouncing tracks together as well as importing exporting from the PC.

If I can get this good with 128MB card imagine once I buy a 256 or 512. Can you recommend any cheap ones?

I'm in the same boat - I was out shopping for them, and suddenly my wife is in "we need to save for Europe" mode!

I'd really rather buy it in a place like Best Buy, where there's some recourse. Another user posted that the Lexar 12X works great, and those are available everywhere. Not the cheapest, unfortunately. I saw a Memorex 256MB for $99 at CompUSA - it's on the "approved" list from Fostex, but the specs on the Memorex web site make me wonder - the say it is a Toshiba card, but the specs don't match the 'approved' Toshiba.
 
Very slick. What kind of bass? I'm suprised the direct sound is that good, anything between bass and input?

Also didn't know the DR-5 can be that good. I have an old R8 that isn't so easy to use, and big, takes up a lot of room, i'm off to check out that one. -j.

Thanks, I used a 4 string Peavey Cirrus for the bass, it is my favorite bass. I ran it direct into the MR-8 no eq or compression. I was surprised at how cool it sounded. Of course the Cirrus is like a scalpel, it cuts through anything (it takes 2 9volt battteries to power it's electronics).

The Dr-5 is so easy for me to use. All othe inputs are aligned to corespond with the first several frets of a six string guitar. SO picking out notes is easy since I see it more like a guitar fret board than a keyboard (which I cannot play). The sounds are decent for being an older machine and your can program 3 seperate tracks from the drum track (pick three other instruments) Drum programming is done in patters and then you connect the patterns to form songs. I write my patters in 16/4 so that I do not have link together so many patterns. I bought it off of ebay with a manual and carring case and power supply for 152.00 a few weeks ago. Letme know if you have any more questions.
