hey kids

so not long ago I was lambasted in another forum after some of my home recordings that are on my CD from a few years ago were listened to... i figured after I got aquainted with my new setup and had a song to share, this forum would be the first place to visit (with the hope that some of the kids from the other forum stumble upon it, as I'd love their opinions, but i don't want to make un unrelated thread). in that respect, if you want to know about the equiptment i'm using, ask me to post it in The Rack :)

i am making a modern rock record and had to do as many things I possibly could to avoid sound isolation (i.e. going direct)... anyway, this is my first stab at producing a "full band" mix...I'd love ANY input, really. ok cool..

take care,
ar

It sounds really professional, you did this? The vocals are really harsh on the ears though, I'm listening on headphones.

harsh

yeah that's me
too harsh - as in too high in the mix, too much high end, both?
thanks

It sounds commercial almost, great work I say. Even on my monitors the "S's" in the vocals are really harsh.

I would say it's too much high end, volume-wise its alright.

What's your setup? How'd you mic the drums and guitars? What mic did you use for vocals? (I ask everyone)

mics

like i said it was a battle against sound isolation (or my lack thereof). the drums are all sound replaced with my roland TD-10 v-session module and Motif rack. the electric guitars are mostly through the pod pro (s/pdif), though occasionally mic'd with an sm57 through my 30w mesa boogie... and the bass through the bass pod pro (s/pdif)... the hand percussion is done with a ksm44 through a grace 101 and the vocals with a rode ntk through the same preamp.

thanks so much for your input

I'd love to listen, but just don't have the patience for a 33 minute d/l. I can say in all honesty, dial-up sux! I wish some of you guys would post on NWR so I can stream your stuff.

Man, this song is so damn catchy. I can't stop listening to it :-/

Great work! This is a style I'm not into, so I'll keep my comments limited. Even though I don't like this genre, I can recognize that you put a lot of careful work into the arrangement, the playing, and have a very solidly written song.

I'll try to give one constructive comment though. You did good work on the snare, but maybe you did too much of whatever you did. I'm guessing low end and low mids rolled out, and compression and gate for a "pop". I'm hearing a little too much "pop" and not enough snare. If I'm at all on track, you might consider backing off just a little on that stuff to let more of the real snare sound through. I'm not sure exactly what "sound replaced" is. I'm guessing that's where you trigger a sample to replace the real drum?

snare

thanks for the suggestions fprod...i think i agree with you about the snare. you are right about what sound replacement is. i took a slightly different approach - instead of micing any drums, i used roland's v-drums and recorded all the drums as MIDI data so I could sequence it all and trigger samples with it. the snare sample I used was pretty heavily processed with a waves C4 multiband compressor.

thanks

i like the song. recording sounds fine to me.

only thing i could find to think about is that bass drum is just a little too low eq wise. that probably just taste.

i really like the lyrics.

Not too bad...

...but highly sibilant vocals and I would have liked to hear a better defined kick and tighter low-end.... the bass is also a bit boomy and inconsistent in tone in some places... I would have liked to hear much more punch from the drums ( iwas thinking, boy those sound like V-Drums when I just read your last post and you mentioned they were!) They're really lacking dynamics.

Needs some adjustments but still a reasonable effort....

"Sleeping Alone"

Didn't read other posts... but sorry... I did happen to see one word From Bruce's post... sibilance... yes... agree...

Ok... here we go...

Kick drum slightly mushy... could use some click from the beater...

Snare is tight... ambience on it may be a tiny bit much. Shakers sound good. The progression is interesting. Good vocal performance. Another song that could use BGVs (imagine what pglewis could do with this BG vocal-wise... wow!) Are those hardpanned banjo's? OR Banjo-->right Ebow<---left? Or maybe feedback gtr on the left? Interesting FX. Nice solo guitar... esp the tone...

Pretty good mix... creative arrangement.... nice soundscape. Sounds like no other immediately recognizable band (to this guy anyway ;))

Very good effort. Keep up the good work.

any other suggestions for adding punch to the drums other than fixing the kick EQ? in defense of the v-session kit, i think it's capable of a much more dynamic performance - in this genre, however, a dynamic drum performance tends to seem out of place - referencing cds by bands such as Jimmy Eat World, The Used, Finch...those drums feel very dynamic before i compress the shit out of them...besides half the time i'm triggering samples from other sources.

thanks chad..i agree with too much ambience on the snare i think. to answer your question - it's not a banjo or ebow..it's actually 4 simple motif parts arppegiating - they are all keyboard sounds but i messed around with the LFOs and also shortened note lengths on a few of them to make them percussive...definitely sounds like some weird-ass banjo, and i like it to help drive the song. It's all panned right however, and balanced with the counter melody, ususally appearing on the left, that i did with a mic'd overdriven mesa boogie and jazzmaster.
