Hi guys,

I'm 18 and in September I'm off to a new college to study Music Production and to prepare myself I wanted to build my own low budget home studio. At the moment I have already purchased an iMac computer, 2 X SM57s and an SM58 but I really need help on what else to buy. Mostly, I want to be able to record acoustic guitars and vocals well, but I also want to delve into full band recording, including whole drum set ups, every now and then.

I've done a lot of research and at the moment my shopping list is this:

Samson C02 (pair)
AKG D112
Rode NT1A
Motu 8pre Firewire Audio Interface
Alesis M1 Active Monitors
and good leads and stands.

Do any of you have any comments on whether I'm making any wrong decisions or if I'm missins anything? Please consider that my overall budget is just under £1300.

Thanks very much,

Andy

Headphone system.

^^ second this one.

I like the shure SRH440 not the 880. Great flat response more for monitoring but i use them occasionally for mixing :]

do some research on them.

If you're going firewire you can go a little cheaper but still have some good pres and do a focusrite saffire pro 40 they sound good. and i'd go with some different monitors and treat your room first. i have a whole discussion about it in the studio build section. and i wouldn't get the d112 now if you're working up to it. start with some basics that work well for what you're doing.

NT1-a is a good start. first treat your room then get monitors. then get an interface. then a condenser (mic). now once you've done this you can look into how much money you have left over and go from there.

this will cost you depending ^^ treatment (175$ ish) if you DIY monitors around (400$ depending on 5" or 8") then interface around 600$ depending on size. so you're looking at like 1200$ so far.

then work from there. do a lot of research so you know what everything does and how it works, and if it suites your needs not if it's the best in the world.

hope that helps.
